Student answer (Band 6.5)

The given diagram illustrates different activities done by number of participant at a social center in Melbourne, Australia under a specific time period of 2000 to 2020.

Overall, it can be seen that film club had the highest number of participant with the most stable numbers in comparision to other acitivities at the same center with the highest growth in table tennis.

Musical performance had no participants between 2000 to 2005 with the growth of 12 participants in 2010, 16 in 2015 and 18 participants in 2020. Table tennis started with 16 participants in 2000 with 20 participants in 2005 and 2010, rapid growth can be seen with 36 participants in 2015 and 54 participants in 2020. Amateur dramatics was the only acitivity with major reduction in numbers, starting off with 26 participants in 2000 following by a small increment of 28 in 2005 and then showing a reduction of 20 participant in 2010 witch further gets down to 14 and 6 in 2015 and 2020.

Martial had a stable number of participants throughout the period with 36 participants in 2000, 32 in 2005 with increase of 38 particpants in 2010 and then 35 in 2015 and again 36 participants in 2020. Film club had the most number of participants along with stability, starting off with 64 in 2000 reducing to 62 in 2005 and 60 in 2010, these numbers then again increased to 64 participants in 2015 and 66 participants in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response gives a clear overview of the main patterns: the film club remains the largest and relatively stable activity, while table tennis shows the strongest growth. It also reports the key movements in all five activities, including musical performances rising from zero and amateur dramatics declining substantially. Most figures match the chart; the one notable discrepancy is martial arts in 2015, reported as 35 rather than approximately 34. The description is well supported with data and makes relevant comparisons, although the overview could be more concise and could explicitly note that table tennis overtakes martial arts by 2015. This is a strong, well-developed summary, with only a small factual slip and some scope to sharpen the selection of headline comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is organised into a brief introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs, and the information generally progresses logically. Grouping musical performances, table tennis and amateur dramatics before discussing martial arts and the film club makes the trends easy to follow. Linking phrases such as “Overall,” “then,” and “following by” help signal sequence, though some connections are mechanical or awkward. The overview repeats the film club’s stability and high participation, which is then repeated in the final paragraph, and the long body sentences sometimes pack several data points together. More deliberate grouping by contrasting trends, plus clearer sentence boundaries and less repetition, would make cohesion more flexible and the progression smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for describing the graph, with useful trend language such as “rapid growth,” “reduction,” “stable,” and “starting off.” These choices communicate the main patterns, and the writer attempts some variation rather than relying only on “increase” and “decrease.” However, several word-choice and collocation problems reduce precision: “numbers of participant,” “highest growth,” and “major reduction” are not natural in this context, while “under a specific time period” is awkward. There are also spelling errors, including “comparision,” “acitivities,” “witch,” and “particpants.” Use standard graph-reporting phrases and check spelling and plural forms to make the vocabulary more accurate and controlled.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response attempts a mix of simple and longer sentences, including clauses linked with “with,” “while,” and “then,” and the overall meaning remains clear. However, grammatical control is uneven, particularly in longer sentences that combine several trends. For example, “Table tennis started with 16 participants in 2000 with 20 participants in 2005 and 2010, rapid growth can be seen…” joins independent clauses with a comma; this should be separated or linked with a conjunction. There are also errors in articles, agreement and sentence construction, as in “by number of participant” and “Amateur dramatics was… starting off… following by.” Aim for shorter, accurately punctuated sentences and practise consistent past-tense reporting structures.
