Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

The response identifies the graph’s subject and period, and its overview correctly notes that the film club had the highest participation overall. However, it does not provide the required summary of the main features: there are no supporting figures or comparisons, and the statement about musical performances ends unfinished (“MUSICAL PERFORMANCES EXPIR…”). The chart also shows important contrasting trends, especially the sharp rise in table tennis and the decline in amateur dramatics, which are not reported. The response contains 38 words, so it is substantially below the 150-word minimum. To improve, complete the overview and describe the main trends with selected figures from the graph.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

There is a basic attempt to organise the response: it begins with an introduction and then signals an overview with “OVERALL.” This gives the reader a simple starting structure. However, the response stops after an incomplete second sentence, so there is no developed progression from overview to details and no paragraphing to distinguish the main features. The contrast introduced by “WHILE” is also left unfinished, preventing the relationship between the activities from being understood. Build a clear sequence with an introduction, a concise overview, and one or two detail paragraphs grouped by trends. Use linking expressions only where they clarify comparisons, and ensure every sentence is complete.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The response uses some relevant task vocabulary, including “LINE GRAPH,” “INFORMATION,” “ACTIVITIES,” and “OVERALL,” and the reference to the “FILM CLUB” shows awareness of the chart’s categories. However, the range is very limited, with no vocabulary for describing changes or comparing figures. Several choices are inaccurate or awkward: “people participated” and “activities took place” do not express the intended meaning naturally, while “MAXIMUM PEOPLE” is an imprecise way to describe the highest participation. “ILLUSTATES” is also misspelled, and “EXPIR” is incomplete. Use accurate phrases such as “number of participants,” “participation rose,” and “remained the most popular,” and check spelling and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts a complex overview structure with “OVERALL” and “WHILE,” but the second sentence is incomplete: “WHILE MUSICAL PERFORMANCES EXPIR” has no finished clause, so the relationship is not grammatically expressed. The opening sentence also contains problems with verb forms and sentence construction, as in “people participated in the various activities took place.” Articles and prepositions are missing or awkward in “in social centre in Melbourne city.” The limited amount of writing makes it difficult to demonstrate a range of accurate structures. Practise complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, for example, “The graph shows the number of people participating in five activities at a social centre in Melbourne from 2000 to 2020.”
