Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the five activities and report several relevant patterns, including the film club’s consistently high participation, the sharp rise in table tennis, and the decline in amateur dramatics. However, the response only partially summarises the graph: it gives few figures and does not clearly compare the overall starting and ending positions. Some details are inaccurate or unclear. For example, musical performances begin in 2010, not 2005, and amateur dramatics and table tennis are both at about 20 in 2010, rather than being described as simply “same” without context. The claim that film-club participation has “no increase” conflicts with its rise to about 66 by 2020. Select the main trends, support them with key figures, and check each comparison against the chart.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The response follows a basic order: it introduces the chart, names the activities, and then describes some trends. This gives the reader a general sense of the subject. However, the ideas are presented as one continuous block, with no clear overview or grouping of related trends. Repeated openings such as “the number of participants” and “in film club” make the progression feel list-like, while links between points are limited. Some statements also sit awkwardly beside one another, such as saying film-club numbers have “up and downs” and then that there is “no increase.” Use separate paragraphs for an overview and key details, and group rising, falling, and relatively stable activities to make comparisons easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “participants,” “increased,” “decreased,” and “compared,” so the topic is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several phrases are imprecise or repeated. “Up and downs” is informal and does not specify the pattern, while “drastically increases” overstates the gradual rise in musical performances. There are also spelling and word-choice problems, including “melborne,” “ameteur,” and “musical instruments” where the chart says “musical performances.” These errors sometimes make the intended meaning less clear. Aim for accurate activity names and more precise trend language, such as “fluctuated slightly,” “rose steadily,” or “fell considerably,” choosing terms that match the scale of change.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response mainly uses simple present-tense statements and attempts a few longer structures, but grammatical errors are frequent and sometimes make relationships between ideas difficult to interpret. Examples include “the number of participants in amateur dramatics are decreased,” where the subject and verb form do not agree, and “the participants in musical performance is started,” which has an incorrect verb construction. Articles and sentence boundaries are also inconsistent, as in the opening “Then given line chart” and the long sequence of statements joined without clear punctuation. Practise accurate patterns such as “the number of participants fell from…to…” and “participation began in…”. Vary sentence structures only after securing subject–verb agreement, verb forms, and punctuation.
