Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify several important patterns: film club remains the largest activity, amateur dramatics declines markedly, and table tennis rises strongly. You also cover all five activities and include relevant figures, such as table tennis reaching about 55 and amateur dramatics falling to about 5 by 2020. However, the overview is incomplete: it does not highlight table tennis as the strongest growth trend or musical performances’ rise from zero. Some details are inaccurate or imprecise: film club is described as fluctuating without reporting its recovery to 66, and martial arts is said to decline to 30 in 2005, whereas the chart shows about 32. Give a clearer overview and report the main comparisons more accurately.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an opening, an overview, and paragraphs describing the activities. Phrases such as “Moving on” and “Finally” help signal transitions, and the reader can generally follow the sequence from 2000 to 2020. However, most of the data is packed into one long paragraph, making comparisons between series difficult to see. Some linking is mechanical, and the repeated use of “and” creates run-on sentences, particularly in the table-tennis description. Separate the overview from the detailed comparisons, group related trends together, and use clearer sentence boundaries. This would create a more consistent progression rather than a list of figures.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant task vocabulary, including “participants,” “declined,” “fluctuated,” and “reached its peak,” so the main trends are usually understandable. However, the range is limited and several word-choice, collocation, and spelling problems reduce precision. Examples include “large numbers of participants is recorded,” “show their interest,” and “the numbers of individuals gradually increase”; these are not natural ways to describe chart data. There are also frequent spelling errors, such as “socail,” “flucuated,” “intrested,” and “amature,” which make the writing less polished. Build a reliable set of trend verbs and phrases, and check spelling and word forms before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and longer sentences, and the response communicates the broad trends. However, complex sentences are often faulty, and errors occur frequently in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “large numbers of participants is recorded” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “with slightly decreased” uses an incorrect verb pattern. In “the number … is almost 65 … with slightly decreased,” the sentence structure also makes the relationship between the figures unclear. Punctuation is inconsistent, with missing spaces after full stops and long sentences joined by commas or “and.” Practise writing shorter, complete sentences first, then combine ideas using accurate clauses and verb forms.
