Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The opening identifies the chart as a line graph about participation in activities at a Melbourne social centre, so the topic is understood. However, the response does not report any figures or identify the activities behind the trends. Its overview is also inaccurate: it says three sectors rose and one fell, whereas the graph shows different patterns across five activities, including film club’s broadly stable numbers, martial arts’ fluctuations, and musical performances’ rise from zero. The response contains only 38 words, well below the 150-word minimum; 9 words copied from the prompt are excluded from that count. To address the task, provide a clear overview and compare the main rises, falls and stable or fluctuating series with selected data.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response has a basic progression: it first introduces the graph and then attempts to give an overview, using “It is noticeable” to signal a shift. This gives the two sentences a simple relationship. However, there is no developed paragraph structure or logical grouping of the chart’s information, largely because the response ends before any comparisons are presented. The overview’s reference to “three sectors” and “1 sectors” is also unclear, as the activities are not named. Organise the response into an introduction, an overview, and one or two paragraphs comparing related trends. Use clear references to the activities so readers can follow each point.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response uses some relevant task vocabulary, including “line graph,” “participants,” “social centre,” and “activities,” which makes the general subject clear. It also attempts a more formal reporting phrase with “illustrates.” However, the range is very limited, and several choices are inaccurate or awkward: “numerous numbers” is redundant, “in the span of two decades” is less natural than a concise time-period phrase, and “sectors” does not clearly refer to activities. The misspelling “noticiable” also affects accuracy. Build a small set of precise trend terms, such as “remained stable,” “fluctuated,” “declined steadily,” and “rose sharply,” and use the activity names rather than vague labels.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The writer produces two complete sentences and attempts a complex contrast with “while,” showing some ability to connect clauses. The first sentence is broadly understandable, but the second contains several grammatical problems: “the numbers … is climbed up” has incorrect agreement and verb form, and “there is decrease in 1 sectors” has article and singular/plural errors. The sentence also shifts awkwardly between present and past-style trend description. Use a clear subject and verb pattern, for example, “The number of participants increased in some activities, while it declined in another.” Check subject–verb agreement, articles, and plural forms, and use past tense consistently when describing changes from 2000 to 2020.
