Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

The response identifies the graph’s subject and gives a broad overview that film club remained the most popular activity. However, the overview is unclear and partly inaccurate: table tennis was not consistently the least popular, and musical performances began in 2010, not 2005. The account then stops after introducing martial arts, so it does not report the main changes in table tennis, amateur dramatics, musical performances, or martial arts. The film-club figures are also slightly overstated, though small differences are not important. At 93 words, the response is below the required 150, and this contributes to the very limited coverage. To improve, complete the report with the major trends and relevant comparisons across the period.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

There is a basic attempt to organise the response, with an introductory sentence, an overview paragraph, and a further paragraph beginning to describe the data. This gives the reader some sense of the intended structure. However, the progression is not sustained because the final paragraph ends abruptly at “Martial arts,” leaving the report incomplete. The overview also combines several ideas in a confusing way, particularly the claim that table tennis was the lowest “but only for 5 years” and the reference to participants dropping “till 2020.” Linking and punctuation are limited, and the extra spacing before “table tennis” does not help readability. Use separate, complete paragraphs for the overview and key details, and connect comparisons clearly.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The response uses enough topic vocabulary to identify the chart and its activities, including “participants,” “relatively stable,” and “introduced.” These choices show some awareness of the language needed for describing trends. However, the range is limited, and several word choices or collocations are awkward, such as “highest participants,” “remained relatively stable before reaching,” and “dropped till 2020.” There are also spelling errors, including “reaaching” and “particpants,” which reduce accuracy. Build a more varied set of precise trend expressions, such as “the figure rose,” “declined steadily,” or “fluctuated,” and check spelling carefully. More accurate phrasing would make the comparisons easier to understand.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts both a complex opening sentence and a comparative overview, but control is uneven. The opening has an unnecessary comma after “illustrates” and an awkward time expression in “for 20 years during 2000 till 2020.” In the overview, “the highest number of participants were” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while the long sentence beginning “table tennis was the lowest” joins several ideas without clear grammatical structure. The final sentence fragment, “Martial arts,” also leaves the reader without a complete statement. Most sentences are understandable, but the limited range and recurring errors make the report less clear. Practise complete sentences, accurate agreement, and punctuation when combining comparisons.
