Student answer (Band 5.5)
The given line graph illustrates the information of the candidates who interested in various activities in Melbourne in Australia between the year 2000 t2020. Interestingly, amateur dramatics was rapid increase after 2010 and reached at half of the total number.
As can be seen from the graph, film club has the highest participants in the year 2000 and reached at 60 in 2010 and again it goes at original position at 65 participants. Moreover, amateur dramatics had increased by 27 to 30 and after the year 2005 it gradually decreased and reached at only 7 participants in 2020.
furthermore, martial arts fluctuates from 2000 to 2020 and peaked at 45 participants. besides, in the year 2000 table tennis did not have many candidates, but after 2010 it rapidly rose up and reached at 50 participants in 2020 year. while, musical performance was introduced in the year 2005 and representatives were increased only of 10 participants in 2010 and climbed up around 18 participants at the end of the period.
overall, it is evident that, film clubs had the highest participants from beginning to end, while amateur dramatics had the least participants at the end of the period.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify several important features, including the film club’s consistently high figures, the sharp rise in table tennis, and the decline in amateur dramatics. However, the overview is partly undermined by the claim that amateur dramatics increased rapidly after 2010 and reached “half of the total number”; the chart instead shows a steady fall after 2005, ending at about six participants. Some figures and comparisons are also inaccurate: martial arts peaks at around 38, not 45, and film club ends at about 66 rather than returning to its original level. The musical performances series begins in 2010, not 2005. Select the main trends accurately and check each reported figure against the graph.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction to descriptions of the activities and a concluding overview. Grouping several series in the middle paragraphs also helps the reader follow the information. However, progression is weakened by the inaccurate overview and by abrupt transitions such as “furthermore,” “besides,” and “while,” which do not always show a clear relationship between the points. The final overview repeats the claim that film clubs remained highest, but does not correct or summarise the other major trends. Use a clear overview paragraph after the introduction, then organise the details by contrasting trends—for example, rising activities versus declining or fluctuating ones—and use linking words only where their relationship is clear.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant vocabulary for describing charts, including “gradually decreased,” “fluctuates,” “rapidly rose,” and “peaked.” This gives you a basic range for reporting change. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, which sometimes makes the meaning unclear: “candidates who interested,” “reached at,” “original position,” and “representatives” do not describe participants and trends appropriately. “Rapid increase” also misrepresents the decline in amateur dramatics. Aim for precise chart language and avoid repeating general verbs such as “reached” and “increased.” For instance, use “participants,” “stood at,” “rose sharply,” and “fell to” where they accurately match the data.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including clauses linked with “while” and “but,” and the reader can generally identify which activities you are describing. However, errors occur frequently in sentence construction and verb forms, sometimes making relationships difficult to follow. Examples include “candidates who interested,” “between the year 2000 t2020,” “it goes at original position,” and “representatives were increased.” There are also problems with articles, agreement, and punctuation, such as inconsistent capitalisation at the start of sentences and commas separating clauses incorrectly. Practise accurate past-tense reporting and complete clause patterns: for example, “The number of participants rose to…” or “Musical performances began in 2010 and increased to…”
