Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The opening identifies the chart’s subject and its 2000–2020 period, and the overview begins to note that the film club had the highest participation. However, the response stops before reporting the main features: it gives no figures, changes over time, or comparisons among the five activities. In particular, it misses the sharp rise in table tennis, the decline in amateur dramatics, and the relatively stable martial arts figures. The overview is also unfinished, so the reader cannot tell what other broad patterns the writer considers important. The response is substantially below the required 150 words; develop a complete summary with an overview and selected, accurate comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is a basic attempt at organisation: an introductory sentence is followed by a separate paragraph beginning “Overall,” which signals an overview. The time period is also stated clearly. However, the response ends mid-thought after “film club made up the highest participants,” so there is no progression from overview to supporting details and no developed paragraph structure. The linking between ideas cannot be demonstrated in such a short response. Complete the overview, then organise the main trends into one or two paragraphs, using clear links such as “by contrast” to compare rising and falling activities. This would build on the initial paragraphing already present.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response uses relevant basic terms, including “line chart,” “participants,” “activities,” and “compares,” so the topic is identifiable. However, the vocabulary range is very narrow because almost no data description is attempted. Some phrasing is imprecise: “total participants” suggests a combined total, while the chart shows numbers for each activity; “made up the highest participants” is also an unnatural collocation. There is a spelling error in “acitivities.” Use precise expressions such as “the number of participants,” “had the highest attendance,” and “rose steadily” or “declined sharply” to describe the trends. More varied, accurate trend vocabulary would make the summary clearer.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response contains a couple of straightforward sentence forms, and the first sentence communicates the chart’s subject. The second sentence also uses the present simple appropriately to describe what the chart compares. However, the range is very limited, with no complex structures or sentences describing changes and comparisons. The final sentence is incomplete: “Overall, film club made up the highest participants” does not form a complete, accurate statement about the data. The opening also has an awkward noun phrase in “the total participants.” Practise complete comparative sentences, for example, “While film-club attendance remained high, table-tennis participation rose substantially.” This will demonstrate greater grammatical range while keeping the information precise.
