Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph illustrates information on the numbers of participants for five different activities(film club, martial arts, amateur dramatics, table tennis and musical performances) at a social center in Melbourne, Australia between 2000 and 2020.

Overall, it is clear that musical performances and table tennis increased, however, amateur dramatics declined, film club broadly stable and martial arts fluctuate over the period.

In 2000, table tennis started at about 16 participants, than at about 55 by 2020. musical performances began in 2010 at about 12 participants and rose to about 18 by2020. In contrast, amateur dramatics fell from about 26 to around 6.

On the other hand, martial arts fluctuate around 30 between 2000 and 2020, while film club was broadly stable during the same period and it was far higher then all other activities. it did not increased in numbers of participants. musical performances number of participants started to increased after 2005.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the five activities and give a relevant overview: table tennis and musical performances rise, amateur dramatics falls, and film club remains broadly stable. The main comparisons are generally accurate, including film club being the most popular and amateur dramatics dropping to about six participants. This covers the task well, but some details are incomplete or unclear. For example, table tennis rose from about 16 to 54, with its sharpest growth after 2010; the response gives only its start and end points. Martial arts also fluctuated around the mid-30s rather than simply around 30. The final claim that musical performances began increasing after 2005 is imprecise: participation first appears in 2010. More precise reporting of these stages would strengthen the response further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction and overview to details about the activities. Grouping the rising and falling trends is a sensible approach, and phrases such as “In contrast” help signal comparison. However, progression becomes less clear in the final paragraph: film club is described as stable, then repeated as not increasing, and musical performances are mentioned again. “On the other hand” does not clearly introduce the martial arts and film club comparison, while the final sentence feels added rather than integrated. Use one focused paragraph for the two fluctuating or stable series, and avoid repeating information already stated. Clearer links between each sentence and the paragraph’s main point would make the organisation easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task vocabulary, including “participants,” “declined,” “broadly stable,” and “fluctuate,” so the main trends are understandable. There are also some imprecise or awkward choices that limit flexibility: “started at about 16 … than at about 55” does not express the increase naturally, and “it did not increased in numbers of participants” is an awkward way to describe stability. “Numbers of participants” is repeated several times, and “social center” is less appropriate in this context than the standard spelling “centre.” Aim for precise trend collocations and vary repeated wording, for example, “the figure rose” or “participation remained steady.” These refinements would make the description more natural and exact.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex forms, including the overview contrast “musical performances and table tennis increased, however…” and the comparison beginning “while film club…”. Meaning is generally recoverable, but some errors recur in verb forms, agreement, punctuation, and sentence construction. Examples include “than at about 55” where “then” is needed, “martial arts fluctuate” instead of a past-tense form, and “it did not increased,” which requires the base verb after “did not.” The opening list also needs spacing before its parenthesis, and the overview would be clearer if its contrasting clauses were punctuated as separate or properly joined clauses. Check tense consistency when describing the completed period and proofread each sentence for a complete, correctly linked structure.
