Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

You identify the chart’s subject and give one relevant overall point: the film club remained the most popular activity. You also begin to note that musical performances started at zero and increased, which matches the data. However, the response stops mid-sentence (“which had a cincreased”) and does not report the main changes in the other activities or make meaningful comparisons. In particular, it omits table tennis’s strong rise and amateur dramatics’ decline. The required minimum of 150 words is not met, leaving the task substantially incomplete. To improve, finish the overview and add selected figures and comparisons for the key trends across the period.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is a basic attempt to organise the response: an introductory sentence is followed by an overview beginning with “Overall,” and “However” signals a contrast. These choices give the reader a simple starting structure. However, the response ends abruptly in the middle of the overview, so there is no clear progression into supporting details and no concluding development of the chart’s main features. The contrast introduced by “However” is also left unfinished. Use separate paragraphs for the introduction, overview, and key details, and connect the activities through clear comparisons, such as contrasting table tennis’s rise with amateur dramatics’ fall.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The vocabulary is sufficient to identify the chart and its subject, with relevant terms such as “line chart,” “participants,” “activities,” and “period.” “Highest number of participants” is also an appropriate way to describe the film club’s position. However, the range is very limited because the response contains almost no descriptions of change or comparison, and the final phrase is incomplete. There are also spelling and word-form problems in “begining” and “cincreased,” which make the ending difficult to interpret. Build a small range of accurate trend language—such as “remained stable,” “rose sharply,” and “declined steadily”—and check spelling and word forms before finishing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response shows some control of basic sentence forms. For example, “The line chart depicts the number of participants…” is a complete, understandable sentence, and the overview uses a contrast clause beginning with “However.” The range is nevertheless narrow, with little evidence of varied sentence structures. In “between 2000 to 2020,” the preposition pattern is incorrect; use “between 2000 and 2020” or “from 2000 to 2020.” The final sentence is unfinished, so its clause structure cannot be completed or assessed. Practise combining accurate comparisons with time phrases, and proofread each sentence to ensure it has a complete main clause.
