Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

The response identifies the chart’s subject and gives one relevant overall comparison: the film club had the most participants across the period. However, it does not summarise the main changes in the other activities or support its overview with figures. In particular, it misses the sharp rise in table tennis, the decline in amateur dramatics, and the later start and gradual growth of musical performances; saying that all activities fluctuated is too general to capture these contrasting patterns. The response is also substantially under the required 150 words: it contains 40 words, 110 short, and 8 words copied from the prompt were not counted. Add a concise overview and select key trends with approximate figures to address the task more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The two sentences are arranged in a sensible order: the first introduces the graph, and the second attempts an overall summary. The linking word “Overall” helps signal this shift, so the basic relationship between the sentences is clear. However, the response is too brief to develop a coherent report, and there is no paragraphing or progression through the activities and their changes over time. The phrase “all activities” is also not followed by details that clarify how their trends differ. To improve, use a short introduction, a distinct overview, and one or two body paragraphs grouping the main trends, with clear references to the years and activities.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The response uses a small set of relevant terms, including “number,” “activities,” and “from 2000 to 2020,” and the intended topic is understandable. However, the vocabulary is limited and some choices are not natural for this chart: “knowledge about” is an awkward way to introduce information, and “contestants” does not accurately describe people taking part in activities. Repeating “contestants” also limits precision. Use standard graph-reporting language and vary terms appropriately, for example, “participants,” “figures,” “rose,” “fell,” and “remained stable.” More precise vocabulary would help distinguish the contrasting trends rather than describing them all simply as fluctuations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response contains two complete sentences, and the basic sentence patterns communicate the general topic and comparison. The present-tense reporting verb in “the graph shows” is controlled, and the time span is expressed clearly. However, the grammatical range is very narrow: there are no developed comparisons or clauses describing changes across the years. There is also an article and comparison-pattern problem in “Film club had more contestants from other activities”; the intended meaning would be clearer as “The film club had more participants than the other activities.” The extra spacing in “the number” is a minor punctuation/formatting slip. Practise accurate comparative structures and sentences that report rises, falls, and stable figures.
