Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify the chart’s subject and make an attempt at an overview by noting that film-club participation is high and musical performances are low. However, the overview is incomplete and some key trends are misreported. Film-club figures remain around 60–66, but the response gives 59 for 2000. Table tennis rises substantially, from about 16 to 54, rather than decreasing or remaining the lowest; amateur dramatics also falls from about 26 to 6. The account of martial arts and the other series is difficult to interpret, and the claim that musical performances are low from 2005 to 2020 overlooks their rise from zero to about 18. Select the main rises, falls and stable patterns, and support them with accurate comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response has separate paragraphs and uses basic sequencing signals such as “Overall,” “Then” and “Although,” so there is an attempt to organise the report. However, the information does not progress clearly from an overview to a reliable comparison of the activities. The third paragraph combines several series in a confusing sentence, while the final paragraph repeats that film-club participation is high and table tennis is low, despite the chart showing a strong rise in table tennis. Some linking words do not show the intended relationship between ideas. Group the activities by trend—for example, stable/high, sharply rising and declining—and use clear references to connect each comparison.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
You use some relevant chart vocabulary, including “participants,” “period,” “increased” and “decreased,” and the reader can recognise the general topic. However, the range is basic and repetitive, with “num” and “participants” repeated frequently. Several choices or combinations make the meaning difficult to follow, such as “the participants is 26,” “the mathe number,” and “the high participants num.” Spelling errors, including “Melboourne,” “tabble” and “participantss,” also reduce clarity. Use precise terms such as “figure,” “total” and “stood at,” and describe trends with accurate phrases such as “rose sharply” or “declined steadily.” Check spelling and avoid informal abbreviations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts simple statements and a few longer sentences, but grammatical control is weak and errors frequently make relationships between ideas unclear. For example, “The line graph illustrate” has subject–verb disagreement, while “the number of participants is high” does not consistently match the past-time period being described. Phrases such as “the participants is 26” and “the numbers are 16 during the period” show problems with agreement and sentence construction. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after commas and sentence boundaries that do not clearly separate ideas. Practise accurate past-tense reporting and build short, complete sentences first; then combine related information using clauses such as “while” or “whereas.”
