Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response identifies the graph’s subject and attempts an overview, noting that the film club remained the most popular and that martial arts fluctuated. However, the overview misreports amateur dramatics as showing a “rapid incline”; it actually declined substantially, from about 26 to 6. Several figures and trends are also inaccurate or unclear: film-club participation fell from 64 to 60 by 2010 before rising to 66, not “near to 70,” while martial arts began at about 36 rather than 38. The account ends mid-sentence and omits key developments, especially table tennis’s sharp rise and musical performances’ growth. At 124 words, it also falls short of the required 150. Select the main trends accurately and complete the summary with relevant comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is a basic attempt to organise the response into an introduction, an overview and a detail paragraph, which gives the reader some sense of the intended structure. However, progression is limited: the final paragraph moves between activities without a clear sequence, and the response stops during “Amateur dramatics increas,” leaving the account incomplete. Linking words such as “while,” “however” and “in contrast” are used, but some connections are confusing or incorrectly punctuated, as in “whereas, in 2000” and “fluctuation.t In contrast.” The overview also does not guide the reader toward the most important trends. Use complete paragraphs, group related comparisons, and connect each detail clearly to the overview.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response uses some task-relevant vocabulary, including “participants,” “popular,” “gradual incline” and “fluctuation,” showing an attempt to describe changes rather than simply list figures. However, the range is limited and several word choices or forms are inaccurate, sometimes making the intended trend unclear. For example, “rapid incline” is both an unsuitable description of amateur dramatics and inconsistent with the graph, while “had lead” and “has show” are not appropriate forms in context. Spelling errors such as “Melbouren,” “flim” and “flactuation” are noticeable. Build a reliable set of trend expressions and check spelling and collocations; for instance, use “declined steadily” for amateur dramatics and “rose sharply” for table tennis.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts more than simple statements, using clauses introduced by “while,” “whereas” and “however,” and it generally communicates that the graph covers a period of change. However, the sentence structures are often faulty, and errors frequently make relationships between figures difficult to follow. In “The line graph illustrate,” the subject and verb do not agree; “Flim club had lead” uses an incorrect verb form; and “in 2010 it exprerience gradual incline with 60 figure” lacks accurate tense and article use. Punctuation also disrupts meaning, particularly in “fluctuation.t In contrast.” Practise accurate past-tense reporting and build shorter, complete sentences before combining them with subordinate clauses.
