Student answer (Band 5.5)
The following chart illustrates the number of participants for various activities at one social center in Melbourne, Australia for the period 2000 to 2020.
There are different activities that happened since the year 2000. One of the most prominent activity is Film club that is still holding it's top position with approximately 60 percent back in the year 2000 and still in the middle of 60s and 70s. However, remaining activities were not consistent with their participants.
The table tennis is a rising activity. The participants of it at the start were not that much; however it gradually increased to near 40 percent in the year 2015 and now it is the second highest activity with most participants. Followed by it is Martial arts club that was at the same position with just a little difference in the year 2015.
The musical performances, however, were at the bottom with not even one percent of participants at the start of this activity back in 2000, participants started joining it in 2005 but still it isn't that much popular with still just 20 percent in the present year

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the film club as the leading activity and table tennis as a strong riser, which captures two important features. However, the account is only partial and some details are inaccurate: film-club participation stays around the low-to-mid 60s, not the “60s and 70s”; musical performances began in 2010, rather than 2005; and table tennis reached about 54 participants by 2020, not merely “near 40” in 2015 as the main endpoint reported. The overview also omits the sharp decline in amateur dramatics, from about 26 to 6, and gives little account of martial arts’ fluctuations. Report the main trends across all five activities and use approximate participant numbers rather than percentages.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic paragraph structure, moving from an introduction to general observations and then to activity-specific details. Linking expressions such as “However,” “Followed by it” and “The musical performances, however” show an attempt to connect ideas. Nevertheless, the progression is not consistently clear: the second paragraph makes broad claims, while later paragraphs cover selected activities without a systematic comparison, and amateur dramatics is omitted. Some references, such as “it” in “Followed by it,” are unclear, and the final sentence runs on without a clear concluding point. Organise the report around an overview followed by grouped trends—for example, rising activities and declining or fluctuating ones—and use clearer references.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant vocabulary, including “prominent,” “gradually increased,” “participants” and “at the bottom,” so the reader can understand the general subject and direction of change. However, the range is limited and several choices are imprecise or repetitive. “60 percent” and “20 percent” incorrectly describe participant counts as proportions, while “still holding it's top position” is an awkward collocation. Phrases such as “not that much” and “isn't that much popular” are informal and vague for an academic report. Use precise trend language and vary expressions for increases, decreases and stability; also distinguish a number of participants from a percentage of the total.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt some longer sentences with contrast, as in “The participants of it at the start were not that much; however it gradually increased,” and the overall meaning is generally recoverable. However, control is uneven, with errors in agreement, tense, articles and sentence boundaries. “One of the most prominent activity is” should use a plural noun and matching verb; “activities that happened since the year 2000” has an unsuitable tense construction; and the final sentence joins several clauses without adequate punctuation. The apostrophe in “it's” is also incorrect for the possessive form. Practise accurate comparisons using past-tense verbs for the historical data, and divide long sentences into complete, well-punctuated clauses.
