Student answer (Band 5.5)

Apperantly the graph presented here have the information of the participants for the different activities at one social center in Melbourne,Australia from 2000 till 2020.The x-axis of the graph shows the number of years from 2000 to 2020.Here the on small division is equal to 5 years.Corresponding to that the y- axis has the number of participants. Here on small division is equal to 10 persons. The dark line at the top of the chart represents the number of persons that joined the film club.It shows around 63 persons take part in the film club during this period. The line with the triangular breakings in it represent the number of persons that took part in the martial arts. The line with the square breakings belong to the people who took part in table tennis. The dotted line with the bold square represents the amateur dramatics. The line with the cross is for the musical performances. The number of people is different for every activity but the two that stand out are the film club as the number of people there almost remains equal from where they started. On the other hand we have the table tennis players as their numbers increased very rapidly as compaired to the numbers from where they started.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the chart’s subject and correctly highlight two important features: film-club participation stayed broadly stable, while table-tennis numbers rose sharply. However, the report only partially summarises the data. It mainly describes the axes and explains the line symbols, rather than comparing the five activities over time. The claim that film-club participation “almost remains equal” is broadly accurate, but “during this period” overlooks its small dip and later rise. More importantly, the response gives no account of the steep decline in amateur dramatics, the relatively steady fluctuations in martial arts, or the introduction and growth of musical performances. Include an overview of the main contrasts and support it with selected figures from the graph.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic sequence: it introduces the graph, explains its axes and lines, and then comments on two trends. This gives the reader some organisation, and the contrast signalled by “On the other hand” is relevant. However, the explanation of the chart’s symbols takes up much of the report and delays the main comparisons, so the overall progression is not clear. Several sentences repeat the same pattern of identifying a line and its participants, while the final comparison is not developed into a complete summary. Organise the response into a brief introduction, an overview of the main trends, and a paragraph comparing the activities with supporting data. Use linking phrases to show changes and contrasts rather than listing chart features.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary such as “participants,” “increased,” and “remains equal,” and the reader can generally understand which activities you mean. However, the range is limited and some word choices or collocations are imprecise: “persons that joined” is less natural for describing participation, and “numbers increased very rapidly as compared to the numbers from where they started” is wordy. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “Apperantly” and “compaired,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for concise, chart-specific language and vary the verbs used to describe trends. For example, describe figures as rising, falling, fluctuating, or remaining stable, and use “participants” consistently rather than switching to “persons” or “people.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt some longer sentence forms, including the contrast beginning “On the other hand,” and most of the intended meaning remains understandable. However, errors in agreement, articles, and sentence construction occur repeatedly. For example, “the graph presented here have” should use a singular verb, and “the line … represent” should agree with the singular subject. The opening also contains several run-on sentences, while “Here on small division is equal to 5 years” is missing an article and has an awkward grammatical structure. These issues make the report less controlled, even though the basic message can be followed. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement and article use, and separate the introduction into complete, clearly punctuated sentences.
