Student answer (Band 5.0)
The line graph compares the number of participants for different activities: film club, martial arts, amateur dramatics, table tennis and musical performance at one social center in Melbourne, Australia between 2000 and 2020. Overall, film club had higher number of participants, while amateur dramatics had least. Table tennis showed dramatic rise in participants and came at the second number. Participants in musical performance showed sudden climb in it's figures. In 2000, film club had about 64 participants that was greater than the others. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify the graph’s subject and give a relevant overview: film club remains the largest activity, amateur dramatics declines, and table tennis rises markedly. However, the response reports only a small part of the period and ends mid-sentence, so the main trends are not sufficiently covered. Some figures are also inaccurate: table tennis starts at about 16 participants, not “maximum 9,” and the 2000 figures for martial arts and amateur dramatics are about 36 and 26, rather than 38 and 28. Musical performances rise gradually from 2010, rather than showing a sudden climb. The response is also 29 words below the required minimum. Include the later-year figures and compare the key changes to make the summary more complete and accurate.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and a paragraph beginning with details for 2000. This gives the reader some sense of organisation, and “Overall” and “However” help signal relationships between ideas. Nevertheless, the account does not progress through the full timeline and stops during the 2005 discussion, leaving the information incomplete and the paragraphing unbalanced. Some comparisons are difficult to follow, particularly “Table tennis showed dramatic rise in participants and came at the second number.” Organise the body chronologically or group activities by trend, then use clear links such as “By contrast” and “Meanwhile” to guide comparisons. Complete each sentence and paragraph so the progression is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for describing a graph, including “compares,” “participants,” “dramatic rise,” and “decreased.” These choices show some range beyond basic repetition and generally make the topic clear. However, several phrases are imprecise or unnatural, such as “came at the second number,” “maximum 9 people,” and “no record,” which make the comparisons less clear. “Sudden climb” also overstates the gradual increase in musical performances. Aim for accurate collocations such as “ranked second,” “stood at around 16,” and “had no participants.” Check possessive forms and word choice, too: “it’s figures” should be “its figures.” More precise trend vocabulary will help you report the data clearly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more developed sentence forms, for example, “Overall, film club had higher number of participants, while amateur dramatics had least.” The main meaning is usually recoverable, but errors in articles, agreement, and sentence construction are noticeable. Examples include “had higher number” (which needs an article), “had least” (which needs a noun or a superlative construction), and “Martial arts and amateur dramatics recorded about 38 and 28 number of individuals,” where the structure is awkward and agreement is unclear. The final sentence is cut off at “activiti,” so it is incomplete. Use complete, controlled sentences and check articles and plural forms; for example, “Film club had the highest number of participants, while amateur dramatics had the fewest.”
