Student answer (Band 5.5)
The graph illustrates information about the number of people participated in different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia from 2000 to 2020.
Overall the highest participation in 2000 was in film club where the number of participants were around 65 and it remained almost same the over the period of time. In contrast there were less participants in the other activities like in martial arta there were 35 participants which remained the same as in 2020. but it we see the participiants in the amateur dramatics and table tennis thry have a massive difference as compared with participans in 2000. amateur dramatics has a decline in the number of participants which where around 25 in 2000 and 10 in 2020 almost 60% drop whereas table tennis has a massive increase in the number of people who participated it foes from almost 15 in 2000 to around 55 in 2020.
and last is musical performaces in which ther were no participants in 200 but upto 2020 they gradually increased to 20.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main patterns: film club remains the most popular activity, table tennis rises sharply, amateur dramatics declines, and musical performances grow from zero. These are relevant features, and most figures are broadly consistent with the graph. However, some comparisons are imprecise: martial arts fluctuates between roughly 32 and 38 rather than remaining unchanged throughout, and amateur dramatics ends at about 6, not 10. The overview also says there were fewer participants in the other activities without clearly distinguishing their different trends. To strengthen the response, report the key changes more precisely and compare the series at intermediate points, especially the sharp rise in table tennis after 2010 and the contrasting movement of amateur dramatics.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable overall order: it introduces the graph, gives a broad overview, and then describes the activities. Contrast markers such as “In contrast” and “whereas” help signal comparisons. However, the information is presented in one long paragraph, and the progression becomes difficult to follow when several series are joined in a single sentence. The transition “and last” is informal, while “but it we see” interrupts the flow. Use separate paragraphs for the overview and the main details, then group related trends—for example, the rising table-tennis figures alongside the decline in amateur dramatics. Clearer sentence boundaries and more precise referencing would make the organisation easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for describing trends, including “remained,” “decline,” “massive increase,” and “gradually increased,” so the main message is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and some choices are repetitive or imprecise: “massive” is used for both a rise and a difference, and “number of people who participated” is wordier than necessary. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “participiants,” “performaces,” and “thry,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for a more varied set of standard graph-description terms and check spelling carefully. For example, “fluctuated” would describe martial arts more accurately than saying it remained the same.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple statements and longer comparisons, including a contrast between amateur dramatics and table tennis. However, the longer sentences are often difficult to control, and some errors affect clarity. For example, “the number of participants were” has subject–verb disagreement, while “The graph illustrates information about the number of people participated” is missing a grammatical link such as “who.” Sentence boundaries and punctuation are also inconsistent: the sentence beginning “In contrast” runs into “but it we see,” and several new ideas begin with lowercase letters. Practise accurate clauses such as “The number of participants was…” and divide comparisons into complete sentences. This will help you express the trends with greater control.
