Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the main overall contrast: film club remains the most popular activity, while amateur dramatics declines. You also mention the rise in table tennis and the later growth of musical performances, so the response is relevant to the graph. However, some key details are inaccurate or unclear. Table tennis rises to about 36 participants in 2015 and 54 in 2020, not “just above 50% by 2010”; the graph reports numbers of people, not percentages. Musical performances begin at zero and reach about 18 by 2020, but the claim that they rose from above five in 2005 is incorrect. The response is also below the required 150 words. Include accurate comparisons and more clearly report the main changes across the full period.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic structure, beginning with an introduction and an overview before describing individual activities. This gives the reader a general sense of the graph’s main features. However, the body is compressed into one long paragraph, and the sequence of details is difficult to follow: table tennis, amateur dramatics, martial arts, film club and musical performances are presented with little clear grouping or comparison. Some linking phrases, such as “Followed by,” do not form a complete sentence, while “after that” is repeated and does not always make the timeline clear. Use separate paragraphs for the overview and detailed comparisons, and organise the figures by trends or by time period. This would create clearer progression and make the relationships between activities easier to understand.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant vocabulary for describing trends, including “decline,” “rise sharply” and “continuous decline,” and the reader can generally identify the activities being discussed. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate. “Higher ratio” is not suitable for describing the largest number of participants, and “remain in between” is awkward. The repeated use of “after that” also limits variety. There are noticeable spelling errors, including “amost,” “slighlty” and “perfomances,” which reduce the accuracy of the response. Use precise terms such as “number,” “figure” and “participant,” and check spelling carefully. Avoid describing the data as percentages when the graph gives participant counts.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts both simple and more extended sentences, but control is inconsistent, and errors sometimes make the timeline or meaning harder to follow. For example, “By 2010 it rise sharply” has an incorrect verb form, and “which remain at 20%” does not agree with its subject or maintain the appropriate tense. The fragment “Followed by amateur dramatics” is not a complete sentence, and punctuation is missing after “50%.” There are also problems with articles and sentence construction in “at social centre in melbourne.” Most descriptions of past data should use the past tense consistently. Practise forming complete sentences with accurate subject–verb agreement, and use full stops to separate the trends you describe.
