Student answer (Band 5.5)

The line graph illustrates what are the changes made throughout the period in the participation at five activities at social centre in melbourne from 2000 to 2020.

Overall, the film club experienced significant amount of participants which is greater than all other activities. On other hand, table tennis face considerable increase after half of the time period, while amateur dramatics declines accountablely after first five years.

The film club commenced with around 65 participations and fell little bit to 60 then grow toward just below 70 in 2020. The second highest activity is maratial arts which start at approximately 37 participants in 2000 and fluctuate between 30 to 40 also surpassed by table tennis in 2015 which make it third position.

Apart from this the most decreaseing activity is amateur dramatics which increase in starting five years then only fell in remaining years and ends with nearly 6 participants in 2020. Whereas, musical performances overtake it

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main overall patterns: the film club remains the largest activity, table tennis rises strongly, and amateur dramatics declines. Several figures and comparisons are also broadly accurate, including the film club’s fall to about 60 before recovering and table tennis overtaking martial arts in 2015. However, some key features are only partly reported. The overview does not mention musical performances’ rise from zero, and the final sentence, “Whereas, musical performances overtake it,” is unfinished and does not explain when or at what level this happens. The claim that the film club had a “significant amount” of participants is vague, and the table-tennis trend could be supported with its sharp rise to about 54. Covering these features more fully would make the summary clearer and more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, an overview and paragraphs describing the activities. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Apart from this” and “Whereas” show an attempt to connect ideas. However, progression is uneven: the final paragraph ends abruptly, and “Whereas” introduces a contrast without completing the comparison. Some references are also unclear, particularly “which make it third position,” where the reader must infer that table tennis overtakes martial arts. Grouping the rising activities together and the declining or fluctuating ones together would create a more logical sequence. Use linking words only where the relationship is clear, and ensure each paragraph and sentence is complete.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant vocabulary for describing trends, including “fluctuate,” “increase,” “declines” and “overtake,” so the main patterns are generally understandable. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “participations,” “significant amount of participants,” “face considerable increase” and “the most decreaseing activity.” There are also spelling errors, including “maratial” and “accountablely,” which reduce precision. Aim for standard chart language and check word forms: for example, refer to the “number of participants,” say a figure “increased considerably,” and describe amateur dramatics as showing “the steepest decline.” More accurate collocations would make your comparisons sound clearer and more natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including comparisons and clauses beginning with “while” and “which.” However, errors in sentence structure and verb forms are noticeable. For example, “The line graph illustrates what are the changes made” has an incorrect embedded question structure; “which make it third position” has faulty agreement and construction; and “Whereas, musical performances overtake it” is an incomplete sentence. There are also missing articles and prepositions in phrases such as “at social centre in melbourne.” Use direct structures such as “The graph shows changes in participation at a social centre” and check that each sentence has a complete main clause, with verbs matching their subjects.
