Student answer (Band 6.0)

The graph below illustrates the information on the number of people that participates for different activities at one social centre in melbourne, Australia from 2000 to 2020.

Overall, it is clearly evident that, film club remained the most popular choice of activity among people. While, table tennis and musical performances increased over time, amateur dramatics were least of interest. However, martial arts fluctuated within the time frame.

Film club has been the highest of any other activities from 2000 to 2020. From 2020 to 2005 the numbers remained at around 65, it has seen some tiny drop to 60 participants in 2010. However, the number soon rose up to 65 in 2020. Table tennis have seen a significant rise in their participants. The number rose from nearly 15 to 20 within five years and remained stable untill 2010,when it saw a great increase in participants reaching nearly 55 people. Subsequently, for the musical performances, people showed intersest in it from 2005 and the number rose gradually from then reaching nearly 20 participants.

In contrast, amateur dramatics has seen a dramatic decline over the time frame.Though there is a small rise till 2005, the numbers kept decreasing to only about 5 participants in 2020. However, martial arts has seen some fluctuations over the years and almost 38 people in 2020 were interested in it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You provide a relevant overview, identifying the film club as the most popular activity and noting the contrasting rise in table tennis and musical performances and decline in amateur dramatics. Most trends are reported accurately, including table tennis reaching about 55 and amateur dramatics falling to around 5–6. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate: “From 2020 to 2005” reverses the time order, and the film-club figures are described as around 65 across that period, although they were about 64 in 2000 and 62 in 2005. Martial arts ended at about 36, not “almost 38.” The musical performances began in 2010, rather than attracting interest “from 2005.” More precise reporting of these details would make the coverage more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs describing the main trends. The contrast between declining amateur dramatics and fluctuating martial arts is also signalled clearly. However, some linking is mechanical or confusing. “While” and “However” are used repeatedly, and “From 2020 to 2005” disrupts the chronological progression. The long body paragraph moves from film club to table tennis and then musical performances, but the transitions between series could be smoother. Grouping the activities by trend—for example, rising, falling, and fluctuating—would help the reader follow comparisons more easily. Check punctuation around transitions, as in “2010,when” and “time frame.Though,” to make the paragraph boundaries and sentence flow clearer.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing trends, including “remained,” “fluctuated,” “significant rise,” and “dramatic decline.” These choices make the main patterns understandable, and you attempt some varied phrasing rather than relying only on “increase” and “decrease.” At times, however, word choice and collocation are imprecise: “people that participates” is awkward, “the highest of any other activities” is not a natural comparison, and “showed intersest in it” is unclear. There are also spelling errors such as “untill” and “intersest.” More precise terms such as “participant numbers” and “rose steadily” would improve clarity and make the description sound more natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including contrast clauses with “While” and “Though,” and most of the trends remain understandable. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly with subject–verb agreement and tense. For example, “the number of people that participates” should use a plural verb or be recast as “the number of participants,” while “Table tennis have seen” should be “Table tennis has seen.” The past-time chart is also described inconsistently with present perfect forms such as “has been” and “has seen”; past simple would be more suitable throughout. Sentence boundaries and punctuation need attention, especially where a full stop is followed immediately by “Though” or a comma lacks a following space. Greater consistency would improve accuracy.
