Student answer (Band 5.5)
The line graph illustrates the different activities at one social center over a specified period, from 2000 to 2020.
Overall, it is evident that the trend shows a fluctuating pattern throughout the period.
It is also clear that, despite some fluctuations, the number of participants at Film club was consistently the highest, in contrast participants of amateur dramatics experienced a significant decline
On the one hand, Film club was the highest figure started with more than 60 in 2000 then showed a steady increase to reach the peak approximately beyond the 70 in 2020, followed by Martial arts was the second one comapred with other figures remained a steady rise to 40 by the end of the period, subsequently players of Table Tennis rose drastically from 25 to above 50 in the last 2 decades,
On the other hand, musical performers started at 0 then showed a slight growth above 10 in the first decade then experienced an inclined growth from 2010 to 2020.
In contrast participants of Amateur dramatics showed an increase after 2000 reaching over 30 till the year 2005 then experienced a significant decline to under 10 by the year of 2020 to become the smallest number at the end of the period

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify several important features: Film Club remains the largest activity, amateur dramatics declines substantially, and table tennis and musical performances rise. However, some key figures and trends are inaccurate. Film Club peaks at about 66, not above 70, and table tennis rises from about 16 to 54, rather than from 25. Martial arts fluctuates around the mid-30s and ends at roughly its starting level, so describing it as showing a steady rise to 40 is misleading. The overview that the graph has a generally fluctuating pattern is also too broad to highlight the contrasting trends clearly. Select the main changes accurately and support them with approximate figures.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs grouping activities, and phrases such as “Overall” and “In contrast” help signal relationships. However, progression is not consistently clear: the first detail paragraph combines Film Club, martial arts, and table tennis in one long sentence, while the next paragraph discusses musical performances before amateur dramatics is returned to separately. Some linking is mechanical or awkward, particularly “On the one hand” and “On the other hand,” which do not establish a clear contrast between the groups. Improve the organisation by grouping rising activities together and declining or fluctuating ones together, and use shorter sentences with clear links between comparisons.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant vocabulary for describing trends, including “fluctuating,” “significant decline,” “rose drastically,” and “peak.” However, the range is limited by repeated or imprecise expressions such as “the highest figure,” “steady rise,” and “growth,” and some combinations are unnatural, for example “inclined growth” and “players of Table Tennis.” There are also spelling and form errors, including “comapred,” which reduce the accuracy of the vocabulary. Use precise terms that match the data: “participants” for people attending activities, “increased sharply” for table tennis, and “remained broadly stable” for martial arts. Check spelling and capitalisation of activity names.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt longer sentences and use some subordinate structures, such as “despite some fluctuations” and “then experienced a significant decline,” but complex sentences are often difficult to follow because clauses are joined without adequate punctuation. For example, “Film club was the highest figure started with more than 60…” contains two main ideas without a clear grammatical link, and the sentence beginning “followed by Martial arts” is similarly incomplete or awkwardly joined. There are also errors in articles, agreement, and sentence boundaries, as in “the peak approximately beyond the 70” and “participants of Amateur dramatics showed.” Use a mix of shorter, complete sentences and controlled complex forms, checking verb structure and punctuation.
