IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows the process for recycling plastic bottles.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How plastic bottles are recycled
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram below illustrates the steps for recycling plastic bottles.
To summarise, the recycling process is a neverending loop consisting of steps such as collection, sorting, compacting, crushing, filtering, moulding and production .
Firstly, garbage is produced from people using said productes ,the material is then collected by a garbage truck and is brouth to a factory for the recycling. After the materials have arrived they are manually sorted into varies bins according to the criteria. Then, all the sorted matterals are compressed into huge block .After compacting , the individual blocks are demolished by a crusher. The crushed chunks are the filtered to remove any gunk or debris .
When chunks are filtered, they're then processed furthermore to produce plastic pellets.Said plastic pellets are then heated thoroughly to get raw materials. The produced, raw materials are then sent out to form new forms of products and items, later to be sent out to distributers to sell to consumers. Then the cycle repets itself.
overall, the recycling process is a neverending loop comsisting of collection, processing, production and distribution.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover the main stages in a generally accurate sequence, from collection and sorting through compression, crushing, washing, pellet production, heating, and the creation of new products. The overview identifies the process as a loop, which is an important feature, and the final sentence also summarises its broad phases. This meets the task well, though some details are less fully or precisely reported: “filtered” is not the diagram’s term for washing, and distribution to retailers and consumers is added even though it is not shown. The sorting stage could also clarify that unsuitable bottles are rejected. To strengthen the response further, keep every detail tied closely to the diagram and make the overview more specific about the transformation from discarded bottles into new products.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, a sequence of process details, and a concluding summary. The stages are mostly presented in the correct order, and transitions such as “Firstly,” “After,” and “When” help the reader follow the process. However, the final overview repeats the earlier one rather than adding a useful concluding insight, and the paragraphing separates the overview from the process without making the progression especially smooth. Some linking is mechanical, while the long middle paragraph contains many stages in one block. Use clearer paragraph breaks to group the collection and sorting stages separately from processing and production, and rely on precise references to connect each stage rather than repeating “then” or “the materials.”
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “sorted,” “compressed,” “crusher,” “plastic pellets,” and “raw materials,” so the reader can understand the general sequence. There is also an attempt to vary wording with “compacting” and “chunks.” However, several choices are inaccurate or informal for a process description: “garbage” and “gunk” are unsuitable here, “demolished” does not naturally describe crushing plastic, and “filtered” mislabels the washing stage. Spelling errors such as “brouth,” “matterals,” “repets,” and “comsisting” are noticeable, while “neverending” and “said productes” are awkward. Aim for precise process terms and check spelling and collocations carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including a time clause in “When chunks are filtered, they’re then processed…” and a sequence of passive constructions such as “are compressed” and “are then heated.” These forms suit a process description, but control is uneven. Some sentences have faulty or incomplete structures, for example “Firstly, garbage is produced from people using said productes, the material is then collected…” joins two independent clauses with only a comma. There are also errors in articles, plurals, and agreement, as in “into huge block” and “the produced, raw materials.” Capitalisation and punctuation are inconsistent, particularly after sentence openings and around commas. Separate clauses correctly and proofread sentence boundaries, articles, and plural forms.
