Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is a contradicting view of competition at school or workplace. Some people think that it is a good and rewarding thing in terms of personal and professional development. But there are a good number of people who do not agree with it. To them, cooperation is important for achieving personal and professional goals.

While competition may teach us to be the best version of ourselves in competative fields like sports. But it also may drive us to be more focused on academics and studies which in the long run builds our foundation to survive in the fast paced, rapidly changing world. In this process, we may become competent and skilled enough to land in a good job in future.

On the other hand, there is an alternative view on this topic. Some job requires us to be more cooperative and collaborative

if we want to succeed. Jobs that requires extensive thinking and complex engineering, an individual alone cannot come up with a strong solution. Collaboration and cooperation is a must in these kinds of work. Also people from different background collaborting togather can learn a great deal from each others experience. Additionally, Some people believe that schools should not be competitive. Rather, schools should teach students to be more cooperative so that they can learn from each other.

In my opinion, cooperation is more rewarding than competition. Humans would not have survived if we did not work togather in groups. It teaches us to operate in complex setting without much difficulties. Even if we face any difficulties, at least we have someone to talk to about it. For example, during my bachelor i was struggling with my grades. It was until i started joinnig study sessions with my friends before exams. It was a great experience and i learnt a great deal from them. It also strengthened our friendship.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both sides of the discussion and state a clear preference for cooperation: “In my opinion, cooperation is more rewarding than competition.” The examples about complex engineering work and your study sessions make the response relevant, and the personal example gives your view some support. This meets the task well, with some elements showing stronger development. However, the benefits of competition are asserted more than explained: the link between academic competition and building a foundation for the changing world could be made clearer, perhaps with a specific example. Your discussion of cooperation is more developed, but the conclusion could briefly weigh the two approaches and explain when competition may still be useful. This would make the ideas more consistently extended and supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a final paragraph giving your opinion. Signposting such as “On the other hand” and “In my opinion” helps readers follow the argument. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. The second paragraph begins, “While competition may teach us … But it also may drive us,” which combines two contrasting structures awkwardly. The shift from workplace collaboration to school cooperation in the third paragraph is understandable but would benefit from a clearer link explaining how the same principle applies in both settings. Use pronouns and transitions carefully, and make each paragraph’s central point explicit before adding examples, to create smoother progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “personal and professional development,” “collaborative,” “complex engineering,” and “foundation.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and some less common terms are attempted. At times, however, word choice, collocation, and spelling reduce precision: “a contradicting view” is not a natural way to introduce differing opinions, while “competative,” “collaborting,” and “togather” contain spelling errors. Phrases such as “operate in complex setting” and “a good number of people” are also less natural or precise in this context. Aim for accurate, natural combinations and proofread spelling; this will help your vocabulary sound more controlled without needing unnecessarily elaborate words.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional and relative structures, as in “Humans would not have survived if we did not work together in groups.” Meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors recur and occasionally make sentences awkward. For example, “Some job requires” needs plural agreement, and “Jobs that requires” has the same agreement problem. The opening of the competition paragraph, “While … But …,” is an incomplete or incorrectly joined contrast, and “It was until i started joining study sessions” does not express the intended time relationship accurately. There are also issues with articles and sentence punctuation. Practise checking subject–verb agreement and forming complete contrast clauses, while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
