IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people think that competition at work, at school and in daily life is a good thing. Others believe that we should try to cooperate more, rather than competing against each other.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some individuals argue competitvness at work, at school and in regular life is beneficial, while others believe that we have to assist each other than competing. In my opinion, although competitvness is important in some aspects of life, collabrating and developing together is the best to reach the desired level.

On the one hand, people compete in different aspects of life to reach a better position in work roles. This is because, people need to show their ability that they are more stronger and capable of doing things than others. For instance, if there are workers in a company which gives promotion in roles, these employees can work harder without assisting each other in order to occupy the role. So that by working harder than the others, people can achieve the position or the level they desired.

On the other hand, helping and working together can foster growth. Cooperative work enables people to grow together by learning from others, as it helps them to minimise their problems by gaining valuable work experience from their workmates. For instance, an accountant and IT technician can work and grow together in a business. The IT technician can do the data entry and other technology related works and the accountant can help in analysing business activities. This cooperative work can then take them to another level of achievement.

In conclusion, competitveness might be helpful to reach a better position in employment. In my opinion cooperative work is the key to reach the desired level as it helps individuals to share ideas and learn from each other.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the question and gives a clear preference for cooperation, especially in the introduction and conclusion. The workplace promotion example explains why competition may motivate employees, while the accountant and IT technician illustrate how cooperation can combine different skills. These are relevant points, but some are not fully developed: the competition discussion focuses mainly on promotion at work, with little consideration of school or daily life, and the cooperative example describes task division more than how people learn from one another. To strengthen the response, explain the effects of each approach in more depth and connect the examples more explicitly to the wider contexts in the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. The progression from competition to cooperation is easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” help orient the reader. This meets the lower-band expectations securely and shows some features of stronger organisation. However, cohesion is occasionally mechanical, and links within paragraphs could be smoother. For example, “So that by working harder…” is an awkward fragment-like transition, while “This cooperative work can then take them…” does not specify clearly who “them” refers to. Use more varied linking and clearer references to make the relationships between claims and examples more natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The response uses enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate its main ideas, including “promotion,” “cooperative work,” “valuable work experience,” and “share ideas.” It also attempts some less common expressions, such as “foster growth,” though the range is not always controlled accurately. Several spelling errors—“competitvness,” “collabrating,” and “competitveness”—are noticeable, and some word choices or combinations sound unnatural, including “regular life,” “more stronger,” and “technology related works.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding the argument, but they limit precision and naturalness. Check spelling carefully and learn common collocations for discussing workplace competition and cooperation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

There is a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “although,” “because,” and “as.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “people need to show their ability that they are” has an unclear clause structure, and “more stronger” uses an incorrect comparative form. The sentence beginning “So that by working harder…” is not a complete, well-integrated sentence, and “an accountant and IT technician” needs an article before “IT technician.” There are also punctuation issues, such as the comma after “This is because.” Work on sentence boundaries, articles, and comparative forms while retaining the complex structures you are attempting.
