Student answer (Band 7.5)

While some individuals assert that competition in education, in workplace and in daily life is beneficial, others think that cooperation is much more important than competition. Although competing with each other is good to some extent, cooperation fosters greater harmony, success and overall progress.

In today's competitive world, competition is greatly imperative to reach the height of success. In other words, competing to be adaptive to any situation, such as digital technologies, by developing more skills will make an individual more competitive than others. For instance, a person with more certifications in several areas of technology, like Python coding and C++ coding, will definitely be more likely to be hired by an employer. Moreover, competition in education makes a person more studious and results in good academic results and standing. Consequently, an individual holds a better position in a future career.

On the other hand, competition can be harmful and even fatal, whereas cooperation fosters harmony and overall development of society. Involving each other's sorrows and happiness strengthens the relationship and fosters a sense of community. Having a good relationship with each other not only provides mental relaxation, but we can also get immediate assistance in times of need. Furthermore, when something is done cooperatively, it includes more ideas and values, ultimately bringing success to the overall community. For example, by fundraising for impoverished people, we are not only performing our social responsibilities but also bringing our inner satisfaction as well as developing the nation.

In conclusion, while competition brings prosperity in a professional career as well as education, I think cooperation is considered more essential as it brings people closer, enhancing the quality of life by fostering harmony and societal success.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both competition and cooperation before clearly stating your own position. Your ideas are relevant, such as the mention of technical certifications for competition and community support for cooperation. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat brief. For instance, the argument regarding competition in education could be further extended by explaining how it prepares students for the realities of the modern workforce. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting example is fully explored to demonstrate a deeper understanding of the topic. Overall, the position is consistent and well-maintained throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'In other words,' 'Moreover,' 'On the other hand,' and 'Furthermore' to link your ideas effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two opposing viewpoints. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary the way you connect sentences and ensure that the relationship between ideas is always explicit. The progression of arguments is clear, and the central topic of each paragraph is well-defined, making the text easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas clearly. Phrases like 'fosters greater harmony,' 'adaptive to any situation,' and 'impoverished people' show a good command of language. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'competition is greatly imperative,' which is slightly unnatural. Additionally, 'involving each other's sorrows' is not the most precise collocation. To achieve a higher score, focus on using more sophisticated collocations and idiomatic expressions that sound more natural in an academic context. Despite these minor inaccuracies, your vocabulary is adequate for the task and does not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional 'when something is done cooperatively, it includes...' and the concessive 'while competition brings prosperity...'. While there are some grammatical errors, such as 'competition in education, in workplace' (missing an article) and 'bringing our inner satisfaction' (slightly awkward phrasing), these do not impede the reader's understanding. Your control over punctuation is generally good. To improve, aim for more error-free complex sentences and ensure consistent use of articles and prepositions. The current range is sufficient, but increasing the variety of subordinate clauses would enhance your score.
