Some people think that competition at work, at school and in daily life is a good thing. Others believe that we should try to cooperate more, rather than competing against each other.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is often contended that, in our daily life competition is a good thing while others thought that we should appreciate others instead of comparing ourself with them. I predominantly compared both viewpoints and this essay will elaborate both opinions.

On one hand, in our society everyone want to become more valuable than others and want to get more respect. So, they take everyone a competitor at work or in schools and compare their abilities with their colleague. As, nature make a man perfect but may have different hobbies and characteristics and not everyone should be perfect in everything. We have to understand our personal characteristics which could make us different and more valuable than others. For example, in Pakistan students always try to get good marks and study very hard to achieve their goal. But obviously not everyone has a same intelligence level. That's why it develop a stress and anxiety in students.

On the other hand, many people are fully well known about their abilities that make them attractive than others. They want to enhance their personal abilities instead of compare with others. Some students may be not perfect in their studies but they may have some hobbies such as swimming, football and cricket but it a responsibility of their parents to find out their talent and encourage them to be more perfect in their field. For instance, in countries like Germany and France some students skip their education and take admission in clubs.

On the basis of which has been discussed above it is better to conclude that, we have to appreciate others on their achievements instead of compare ourself with them and try to find out our hidden talent that could make us more valuable in society.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion in the conclusion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of why competition leads to stress is relevant but lacks depth. The second body paragraph attempts to discuss cooperation but struggles to clearly articulate the benefits, relying on vague examples like 'some students skip their education'. While the task is addressed, the arguments are not fully extended, and the position could be more consistently maintained throughout the body paragraphs. To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific, well-reasoned justifications for your claims.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. There is a basic attempt at using cohesive devices such as 'On one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'For instance'. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'On the basis of which has been discussed above'. The progression of ideas is generally logical, but the connection between sentences could be smoother to improve the overall coherence of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. You rely on repetitive phrasing, such as 'perfect in everything' and 'valuable than others'. There are also some word-choice errors, such as 'nature make a man perfect' (instead of 'nature makes') and 'fully well known about their abilities'. While the meaning is generally clear, the range of vocabulary is limited, and there is little evidence of less common lexical items or sophisticated collocations. Expanding your range of synonyms and focusing on accurate word forms will help improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('nature make', 'it develop', 'everyone want') and incorrect verb forms ('instead of compare', 'instead of compare ourself'). Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence construction is often clunky. To improve, focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring that verb tenses are used consistently throughout the essay. Increasing the variety of complex structures while maintaining accuracy is essential for a higher band.
