IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people think that competition at work, at school and in daily life is a good thing. Others believe that we should try to cooperate more, rather than competing against each other.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The idea of having a competetive environment in the office or the classroom rather than a cooperative one is in interesting point of view. While I agree with certain aspects of this argument, I believe that not everyone in the workplace is at an equal level of efficiency and instead of competing againt every single one of your colleagues or classmates, we should work together as a team with those who need our assistance.

A competetive environment is a great way to enhance your skills as it forces you to go beyond your capabilities and match your rivals. It gives you a reason to wake up with a purpose and hone your skills, this in turn not only improves your competence but also helps your peers. For example, if a new student joins the class and noticies that everybody in here has a knack for scoring better than they did last time, he'd also want to improve his marks. However, this could also go the other way. If everybody other than you were extra ordinary than you might get overwhelmed and give up.

I believe in a cooperative environment, nobody gets left behind. It's also very helpful for those who might be shy and don't want to bother anybody by asking for help, this proves to be very helpful for introverts. For example, the first day of a chef interning in a restraurant can be very scary but they wouldn't be as anxious if every other chef there assures them that we'd take everything according to your pace.

In conclusion, although both views have merit, I believe that before assuming anything about the next person and treating them a certain way. We need to get to know them and look at the world with their perspective, only then can we determine how to be around them. If a person is performing well, be competetive with them. If not, help them out.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both competition and cooperation before providing a personal opinion. The position is clear throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. The argument for competition is well-supported with an example, but the conclusion introduces a nuanced 'middle ground' approach that was not fully explored in the body paragraphs. To reach a higher band, ensure that the main body paragraphs fully reflect the complexity of the final opinion, rather than introducing new ideas only in the conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized into four paragraphs. There is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'However', 'For example', and 'In conclusion', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The referencing is generally clear, although the sentence structure in the final paragraph is slightly fragmented, which affects the flow. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the readability of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task. You use some relevant topic-specific terms like 'competitive environment', 'hone your skills', and 'competence'. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'competetive' (repeatedly), 'noticies', and 'restraurant'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. To improve, focus on proofreading for common spelling mistakes and try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations to demonstrate a wider, more precise range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'everybody other than you were extra ordinary' (subject-verb agreement) and 'if a new student joins... he'd also want' (tense consistency). Additionally, the final paragraph contains a sentence fragment: 'before assuming anything about the next person and treating them a certain way.' These errors are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your argument. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences would improve this score.
