Student answer (Band 7.0)
It is argued by some sectors of society that competition plays an essential role in growth of a person, while others argue that this not a good trend everyone should be courageous rather than being competitive. I acknowledge that both approaches are good and have their own benefits, but ultimately I stand with former argument because I believe that this view is more practical and has overarching benefits.
As far as I am concerned, the competition is a part of our daily life and everyday we wake up and face new challenges and these tasks are entirely different for people. For instance, some find study hard because they lack of interest, while his fellows are good in studies and got good grades, on the other side he is unable to have enough passing grades. But, that race of marks keep him alive to work hard rather than sitting idle, this competition motivate him to achieve his desired goals.
Furthermore, we are living in a era where the race to be first and competition is not only in people, it is also an international concern. For instance, Chine wants to compete US, while the US want to compete the world by attracting talent around the globe and want to keep his hegemony alive for the next centuries. This race, that competition made nations to be hardworking and to be motivated and consistent. Because it is said by elders: competition keep us alive to take one step more and those who are afraid of failure they never be able to relish the taste of success.
In conclusion, despite the valid reasons placed by opponents regarding being cooperative rather than competing other, I am still convinced being competitive has overarching benefits and is more substantial.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing arguments for both competition and cooperation, and clearly states a position in the introduction. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. The example regarding 'China and the US' is relevant but lacks nuance, and the explanation of how competition helps an individual in the second paragraph is slightly repetitive. While the position is clear, the supporting points could be more thoroughly extended to reach a higher band. The conclusion is a bit brief and does not fully synthesize the arguments presented.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs. There is a progression of ideas from the individual level to the international level. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'For instance', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The referencing is generally clear, although the sentence structure in the second paragraph regarding 'his fellows' and 'he' is slightly confusing due to inconsistent pronoun usage. Overall, the flow is sufficient to guide the reader through the argument without difficulty.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'hegemony' and 'overarching', which are used correctly. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'growth of a person' instead of 'personal growth' and 'this not a good trend' (missing 'is'). Some phrasing is slightly unnatural, such as 'relish the taste of success'. The range is sufficient but lacks the precision required for a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, including missing articles ('compete US' instead of 'compete with the US'), subject-verb agreement issues ('competition keep us alive'), and awkward phrasing ('those who are afraid of failure they never be able'). While these errors are frequent, they do not impede communication. To improve, the student should focus on article usage, consistent verb tense, and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed with greater grammatical precision.
