Some people think that competition at work, at school and in daily life is a good thing. Others believe that we should try to cooperate more, rather than competing against each other.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The world that we live in is full of competitors, each and every field is full of competitions, so few individuals opine the fact that having competition is good but a group of people argue that working as a team is a better option. Both the view points and my opinion will be discussed in the upcoming paragraphs with valid reasons and appropriate example.

Discussing the former view, supporters believe that, if there will be competition available then he/she can work more ordinarily in terms better opportunity, for instance a student works hard to score good grades or marks than his/her opposition; Additionally, individuals also believe that at some point it is necessary because if there was no competition in real life, political parties would not have improved to be better than there opposition parties.

However others have opinion that working as a whole brings developments and helps to complete task and ventures more effectively and efficiently. For example, if there is some task provided by the manager to the group of workers in the organisation then they must work as a team otherwise there may be conflicts and errors in the project which may result in the downfall of the companies reputation.Besides this working in a team while cooperating and helping each other leads to better leadership quality and improves the skills of the individuals like adaptability, consistency and also develops trust between each other.

To sum up and offer my position, I support the later opinion which is working as a squad, helping each other and bringing consistency which benefit each and every individual whether he/she is in school, workplace or any other field.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both competition and cooperation before providing a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While the example of students and political parties is relevant, the explanation remains superficial. The argument for cooperation is better supported, but the overall depth of analysis could be improved by exploring the nuances of why competition might be detrimental or how cooperation functions in different contexts. The position is clear throughout, but the conclusion is brief and lacks a summary of the main arguments presented.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each viewpoint, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Discussing the former view', 'Additionally', 'However', and 'To sum up' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel mechanical, and there are instances where the flow is slightly disrupted by awkward phrasing, such as 'The world that we live in is full of competitors, each and every field is full of competitions'. Paragraphing is appropriate, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs could be strengthened by using a wider variety of linking words.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'opine', 'ventures', and 'adaptability'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'work more ordinarily' instead of 'work more effectively', and 'there opposition' instead of 'their opposition'. Spelling errors like 'later' instead of 'latter' also occur. To reach a higher band, the student needs to focus on more precise collocations and ensure that word choices are contextually accurate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the writer attempts complex sentences, they are often marred by grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'if there will be competition available then he/she can work more ordinarily'. There are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement, punctuation, and word forms (e.g., 'there' instead of 'their'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are persistent throughout the text. To improve, the student should focus on mastering basic sentence construction and proofreading for common grammatical slips.
