Student answer (Band 6.0)

Recently, there is an ongoing debate about whether to compete rather than to cooperate amongst ourselves. While some argue that competition in school and at work is beneficial, others maintain that cooperation is a preferable option as it enables better outcomes. In my opinion, there should be a balance between these two views as it will benefit both individuals and society. This essay will discuss both perspectives and explain my reason for my opinion.

On the one hand, competition in our daily life encourages logical thinking. When people compete among themselves they tend to brain-storm in other to outstand, creating opportunities to solve other problems. For example, in Nigeria competition has encouraged youths to be creative in the process of inspiring to be the best ideas of solving other problems comes to light. Therefore, one might argue that competition is very stressful, but the financial benefits derived from competition is a preferable option.

On the other hand, cooperation among people yields better results. When individuals come together to perform a task the end result is always perfect. Likewise in an organization that involves all it staffs to tackle a matter is usually fruitful. For example, in Nigeria ,cooperation among staffs in manufacturing industry has lead to the production of quality goods. As a result enhancing economical growth.

In conclusion, although competition encourages logical thinking, while cooperating enables better results. I think that they should be a balance between the two views as they are both significant for individuals development and society growth.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both competition and cooperation and providing a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention logical thinking and financial benefits, these points are not fully explored or supported with deep analysis. The examples provided, such as the reference to Nigeria, are relevant but remain quite general. To reach a higher band, ensure that each body paragraph provides a more detailed explanation of 'why' and 'how' these concepts function in the real world, rather than just stating the benefits.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand,' 'On the other hand,' and 'Therefore' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For instance, the final sentence of the first body paragraph regarding financial benefits feels somewhat disconnected from the preceding argument about logical thinking. Improving the logical progression within paragraphs would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'ongoing debate,' 'beneficial,' and 'economical growth.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'inspiring to be the best ideas' and 'in other to outstand.' These errors occasionally hinder the precision of your expression. To improve, focus on using more natural collocations and ensuring that your vocabulary choices are contextually appropriate. Expanding your range to include more sophisticated, topic-specific vocabulary would also be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'in other to' (instead of 'in order to'), 'all it staffs' (instead of 'all its staff'), and 'has lead to' (instead of 'has led to'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article usage issues throughout. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct verb forms will help improve your accuracy.
