Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Today, whether individuals should compete or cooperate is a heated debate. Although competition might be beneficial in some respects, but cooperation is a better option in long term. In this essay i will try to elaborate both perspective and give my own point of view.

From one perspective, competition boosts productivity. Competition often encourage companies and individuals to invent new ideas. For example, AI companies like Chatgpt, Gemini, Deepseek and so on, are always inventing new feature and trying to improve themselves to overcome other companies. which ultimately benefits the general public.

Nevertheless, competition at school and daily life, between two individuals can create a bad impact. For instance, school is a place of learning things. It is also a place where we try to socialize with each other. Places like school and college, competition between two students can affect them mentally. That rule applies in daily life too. In our daily life, we meet different backgrounds of people, their circumstances might be fully different from us. If two lives from two different situation try to compete, they would be ended up frustrated. Same goes to workplace, employees may have the tendency to outperform other employees to get promotion, but in the end companies might face losses.

Overall, competition is only beneficial in some aspects such as, between two different companies. Competition should not come in educational life or in our daily life. Frthermore, workers should try to avoid conflict in work place, this would help both the company and the workers.

In conclusion, competition might bring short term benefit, but I strongly believe that cooperation can bring long term achievement. People should collaborate more in fields like school, daily life and workplace.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the mention of AI companies for competition and the psychological impact of competition in schools. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited; for instance, the point about workplace competition leading to company losses is mentioned but not fully explored with a concrete example. The position is consistent throughout, but the essay would benefit from more depth in the supporting arguments to reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Nevertheless', 'For instance', and 'In conclusion', which help the flow of ideas. However, some transitions are a bit mechanical or repetitive, and there are minor issues with sentence-level cohesion, such as the sentence fragment 'which ultimately benefits the general public' following the example of AI companies. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'outperform', 'socialize', and 'circumstances'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are occasional inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'different backgrounds of people' (should be 'people from different backgrounds') and 'they would be ended up frustrated' (should be 'they would end up frustrated'). More precise and varied vocabulary would improve the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as the redundant 'Although... but' construction in the introduction, and issues with subject-verb agreement and article usage (e.g., 'in long term' instead of 'in the long term'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. The punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence structure could be more varied to demonstrate greater control.
