Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the argument regarding competition leading to crime is introduced but lacks a logical connection to the prompt, and the example cited (Oxford University research) is vague and not clearly linked to the topic. While the position is consistent, the supporting arguments would benefit from more depth and clearer logical progression to reach a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into paragraphs, and there is a clear attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'To conclude'. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or inaccurate, such as 'In concur with this view' or 'Still i do not concur with this view', which disrupts the flow. The referencing is occasionally unclear, and the transition between ideas within paragraphs could be smoother to improve the overall logical progression.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. There are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'competitions are invite the number of crimes' and 'competitions get first priority'. The range of vocabulary is limited, and the student relies on repetitive phrasing. To improve, the student should focus on using more academic collocations and ensuring that words are used in their correct grammatical context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('competitions play', 'it get better'), article usage, and incorrect verb forms ('competitions are invite'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be noticeable and affect the overall clarity of the writing.
