Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is true that competition between people at school, work and daily life is increasing gradually. Many people believe that it is beneficial, while others argue that people should cooperate with each other to lead a happy life. I strongly believe that cooperation is extremely helpful because it brings several advantages.

On the one hand, there are a number of reasons why people think that competition is a good thing. One possible reason is that it pushes people to do hard work. For instance, if a student want to make better result than the other students in the class, he has to read attenttively and give more concentration to his study. As a result, he is more attentive to his studies, which increase his productivity. In addition, having a competitive mindset allows people to gain deep knowledge. Without proper understanding and knowledge, nobody will able to compete with others and beat them.

On the other hand, cooperation provides numerous advantages to the society. To begin with, it allows people to increase interpersonal relationship with others. To cite an example, when a person helps anyone to come out from hardship, he makes a strong bond with the person and he also expects help from him if he will face any difficulties. Therefore, the nature of hostility will demolished from the society and people can live unitedly. What is more, working together helps people to complete any task without less effort and time. For example, if students make a group to prepare an assignment of their course, they can easily complete the task by dividing the each section to each others. As a result, they can improve their communication and problem solving skill.

In conclusion, although competition brings a number of benefits to an individual, I firmly believe that people should cooperate to each other.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both competition and cooperation before clearly stating your own opinion. The ideas are relevant and generally well-supported. However, some arguments could be further extended; for example, the point about 'productivity' in the competition paragraph is a bit brief. The position is clear throughout the essay, and the conclusion effectively summarizes your stance. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting example is fully linked back to the main topic sentence to provide a more comprehensive development of ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and you use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'To begin with', and 'As a result' to connect your thoughts. However, there are some minor issues with mechanical usage, such as 'dividing the each section to each others', which slightly disrupts the flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the transition between the two sides of the argument is smooth. Overall, the structure is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'hostility', 'interpersonal', and 'productivity' correctly. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'without less effort' (should be 'with less effort') and 'cooperate to each other' (should be 'cooperate with each other'). While you attempt to use some less common vocabulary, there is room to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and idiomatic expressions to elevate the tone of the essay. The spelling is generally accurate, with only a few slips like 'attenttively'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'if a student want' (subject-verb agreement), 'nobody will able to' (missing 'be'), and 'the nature of hostility will demolished' (passive voice error). These errors do not impede communication, but they do indicate a need for more consistent control over verb forms and sentence construction. Increasing your use of error-free complex sentences would help improve this score.
