Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that competition is necessary at schools, at work as well as in daily routine, while many individuals think that teamwork should be encourage in all aspect of life. This essay will discuss both views before presenting my statement why both are equally important.

On the one hand, people contend that competition encourage people for hard-working. They have to work hard alone then they can compete others. It helps individual to boost their skills in real-life situation such as in workplace, schools and in daily life. For instance, students usually do hard-working during exam because they want to compete other students and rank top. If they do not think about competition, they can not study because they will be dependent on other learners.

On the other hand, it is thought that teamwork is more important. Teamwork produces togetherness among individuals because they achive tasks together. Everyone works as a team member according to the situation, and achieve multi-tasks which create the feeling of unity. Additionally, working as a team makes work easier. For example, people take participation in cricket as a team, winning match becomes smoother because they work as a one team. If they do not work together, they may lost. Although working alone is crucial for boosting the individual's skills, teamwork is equally vital because numerous tasks can be achieved through unity.

In conclusion, competition encourages people for hard-working, while co-operation makes work easy and creates unity among people. In my opinion, both are equally important because sometimes unity is required, and sometimes working alone is required. Consequently both are vital.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both competition and cooperation and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, though the development is somewhat basic. For instance, the argument for competition relies on the idea of 'hard-working' to rank top, while the teamwork argument uses a sports analogy. While these points are clear, they lack depth and nuance. The position is consistent throughout the essay, and the conclusion effectively synthesizes the two viewpoints. To reach a higher band, you should aim to expand your supporting points with more sophisticated reasoning or specific, real-world examples that go beyond general observations.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central topic. There is a logical progression from the introduction to the body paragraphs and the conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', 'Additionally', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally repetitive. For example, the phrase 'in daily life' is used multiple times in a short space, which affects the flow. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that pronouns refer clearly to their antecedents would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for a higher band. You use common terms like 'hard-working', 'boost', and 'easier' repeatedly. There are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'achive tasks' (achieve) and 'take participation' (participate). While the meaning is always clear, the lexical range is somewhat limited. To improve, try to incorporate more topic-specific collocations and academic vocabulary, such as 'foster a collaborative environment' or 'incentivize individual performance', rather than relying on basic descriptive language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'competition encourage', 'they achive') and article usage. There are also issues with word forms, such as 'they may lost' instead of 'they may lose'. These errors are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on mastering subject-verb agreement and the correct use of modal verbs. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring they are error-free will help you achieve a higher score.
