Student answer (Band 5.0)

Some people think that competition at work, at school, and in daily life is a good thing while others think that to cooperate more without any competition against each other. In my view, both thoughts have their own views, such as competition at workplace, at school and in daily life activities motivated to complete the task on time whereas cooperation is the main key to complete the task with each other.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, as it is only 162 words long and ends abruptly mid-sentence. Consequently, the task is not fully addressed. While you attempt to discuss both competition and cooperation, the ideas are underdeveloped and the essay lacks a proper conclusion. The position is stated in the introduction, but the lack of completion prevents a full exploration of the topic. To improve, you must ensure you write a full essay with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion, ensuring all parts of the prompt are addressed with sufficient supporting detail.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay lacks a clear logical structure due to its incomplete nature. While you use some basic cohesive devices like 'on the one hand' and 'on the other hand', the progression of ideas is hindered by the abrupt ending. Paragraphing is attempted, but the second paragraph is incomplete. To improve, focus on using a wider range of linking words (e.g., 'furthermore', 'consequently', 'in contrast') to connect your ideas more fluidly and ensure each paragraph has a clear topic sentence followed by supporting arguments and examples.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for basic communication but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You rely on repetitive phrasing, such as 'complete the task on time' and 'in daily life'. There are also issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'motivated to complete' instead of 'provides motivation to complete'. To improve, try to incorporate more academic collocations and synonyms to avoid repetition. Focus on using precise terminology related to the topic of competition and cooperation in professional and educational settings.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'competition... motivated to complete' (subject-verb agreement/tense issues) and 'beside this competition at school in between students can learn' (awkward phrasing). Sentence structures are mostly simple or contain errors when attempting complexity. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing capital letters at the start of sentences and improper use of full stops. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, subject-verb agreement, and ensuring that complex sentences are punctuated correctly.
