Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people believe that competition at the work place, educational centres and in our day to day life is a good thing while others think differently. This essay will discuss both views and provide my opinion with the explanation.

People think that competition is good in the various aspects of our life because it allows people to compare their skills with others and encourage individuals to learn more. Moreover, competition not only improve the skills of a person in a known domain but also motivate people to learn a new skill. Many people work better in a competitive environment as it helps them to grow in both the professional and personal aspects of the life. Furthermore, competition allows individuals to push their limit of potential and learn various things in different stressful condition. Competition allows a person to manage and handle various conditions all at once. For instance, a person working in a corporate job trys to develop more technical skills to get more opportunities of promotion in comparison to his colleagues.

On the contrary, others argue that people should try to cooperate more with each other rather than competing. This is due to the fact that competition leads to growth of bad feelings such as jealousy, envy in the heart of individual. Additionally, competition may cause fight among the people and affects their relationship with each other. A healthy competition will help a person to learn more things but an unhealthy competition leads to bad results such as fights. Cooperation among persons allow them to enjoy life and live peacefully. Cooperation among individuals allow them to maintain good relationships. If people become cooperative then it increase the chances of learn new things from each other easily. In the conclusion, I believe that competition at work place, school and in our daily life is good because it helps people to improve themselves and learn new things. Furthermore, competition increases the potential of a person and eventually the opportunities increase.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both competition and cooperation before providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and generally well-supported. However, the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive; for instance, the benefits of competition are restated in the conclusion without adding new depth. To reach a higher band, ensure that each paragraph introduces distinct, well-elaborated points rather than repeating similar concepts. The position is consistent throughout, and the essay structure is appropriate for an academic task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the two opposing views. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'On the contrary' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, particularly the frequent use of 'Competition allows' and 'Cooperation among'. Improving the variety of linking phrases and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the flow and coherence of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication. You demonstrate a sufficient range of topic-specific terms like 'competitive environment', 'professional and personal aspects', and 'cooperative environment'. However, there is a lack of more sophisticated or 'less common' lexical items that would elevate the score. Additionally, there are minor errors in word choice, such as 'trys' (tries) and 'fight' (conflicts/disputes). Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise collocations and academic synonyms will help you achieve a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('competition not only improve', 'it increase the chances') and article usage ('in the heart of individual'). Punctuation is generally correct, but the sentence variety is somewhat limited. To improve, focus on mastering subject-verb agreement and incorporating a wider range of complex grammatical structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice, while ensuring they remain error-free.
