Student answer (Band 6.0)

In this era, people should see competition in every sector like at work, business and school. However, many people believe that competition at such places help us to grow more, while others think that we should try to help each other. In my opinion, we should do competition to improve ourselves.

There are several reasons why I believe to do a competition. To begin with, if we take any task as a competition then we will do it as soon as we can and try to do more hard work to complete it. By doing it faster we can improve our speed. For example, recently in one office their manager told their employees to do a same particular task for a extra bonus and they discovered that participant completed their task before the time. Moreover, people can work on their weak points. They try to work hard to improve their abilities. For example, in India they launch a digital payment, so everyone learnt it because of the competition. Otherwise there are many people, who do not know how to use a smartphone.

On the other hand, there are various benefits of doing work together. To start with, we can learn and teach different methods to each others, which can help us to improve ourselves quickly. Many giant companies do projects in partnerships, hence they can meet their results as soon as they can. What is more, cooperation helps to do that task in a short time period and with less money, because of more hands working on the same task.

In conclusion, competition help us to improve our weakness and encourage us to do hard work. On the other side, cooperation helps to gain knowledge about different methods and save time and money.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both competition and cooperation and providing a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the example regarding digital payments in India is a bit vague and does not clearly link back to the core argument about competition versus cooperation. The arguments are relevant but could be extended with more depth and specific analysis to reach a higher band. The position is consistent throughout, but the overall depth of the response remains at a functional level.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' are used to link sentences and paragraphs. However, some of the transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as in the sentence 'they discovered that participant completed their task', where the pronoun 'they' lacks a clear antecedent. Despite these minor issues, the overall structure is coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'sector' and 'partnerships', but the range is somewhat limited and repetitive (e.g., the frequent use of 'do' and 'work'). There are also minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'do a competition' instead of 'engage in competition' or 'compete'. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the essay from reaching a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'competition help us', 'everyone learnt it') and article usage (e.g., 'do a same particular task'). Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'if we take any task as a competition then we will do it as soon as we can'. These errors are noticeable but rarely impede the reader's understanding of the main points.
