IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people think that competition at work, at school and in daily life is a good thing. Others believe that we should try to cooperate more, rather than competing against each other.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In today's world, we can see a competetition in almost every aspect of life weather its work, education or life in general which is a positive thing in some poeple's view, while others argue that there should be an environment of cooperation rather than competition. I'm not against a healthy competition however, in my opinion we can grow much faster and better if we cooperate with each other instead of competing against one another.

First of all, I believe that cooperation is more natural and feels more relaxing as compared to competition. If you help someone on something, you'll automatically feel a sense of satisfaction which will have a smooth affect on your mind. Additionally, if you help someone in need, you have already created a supporter and he most probably will help you out if you need some assiatance in future. This way, it is helpful for both instead of rewarding only one individual. Let us take an example of a school where one student is good at maths while the other is good at physics. If the first student teaches maths and the second helps him out with physics, both of them can acheive great results in the end.

Moreover, performing under strict competition creates an extra pressure on individuals which is not healthy for normal mental performance. People should work in very calm environment in order to perform the best which is more likely to happen when there is less competition and more cooperation among the individuals.

Lastly, I believe that there are number of reasons why cooperation overweigh competition and creates a balanced environemnt for all the individuals to perform and play their role in any society.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal position. The ideas are relevant, such as the benefits of cooperation in education and the negative impact of pressure from competition. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the discussion on competition could have been more nuanced by exploring its potential benefits in a professional context beyond just the negative pressure. While the position is consistent, the supporting arguments are slightly repetitive and could benefit from more specific, real-world examples to reach a higher band. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, but the depth of analysis remains at a moderate level.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central theme. Cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'Additionally', 'Moreover', and 'Lastly' are used to guide the reader through the argument. However, the use of these devices is sometimes a bit mechanical. The progression of ideas is generally clear, though the transition between the benefits of cooperation and the drawbacks of competition could be smoother. Referencing is generally accurate, and the paragraphing is appropriate for the task. The essay maintains a coherent flow throughout, meeting the requirements for a solid band 6.5 or 7.0 performance.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning, but it lacks the range and precision required for a higher band. There are several spelling errors, such as 'competetition', 'weather' (instead of 'whether'), 'poeple's', 'assiatance', and 'environemnt'. Additionally, there are minor collocation errors, such as 'smooth affect' (should be 'effect') and 'overweigh' (should be 'outweigh'). While the student attempts to use some topic-specific vocabulary, the frequency of spelling and word-choice errors prevents the lexical resource from being considered highly flexible or precise. The range is adequate for the task but remains somewhat basic.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'there are number of reasons' (missing article), 'he most probably will help' (awkward phrasing), and 'calm environment' (missing article). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some missing commas in complex sentences. The errors do not impede communication, but they are noticeable and occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, the student should focus on subject-verb agreement, article usage, and proofreading for minor slips.
