Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 168 words. This significantly impacts the development of the argument. While the essay introduces both sides of the competition versus cooperation debate, the discussion is underdeveloped. The second paragraph provides a basic argument for competition, but the third paragraph is extremely brief and lacks sufficient supporting detail or examples. Furthermore, the essay fails to address the 'cooperation' side of the prompt entirely, and the student's own opinion is not clearly articulated or supported. To improve, you must expand on each viewpoint with specific examples and ensure your personal stance is integrated throughout the essay.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay uses basic cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand' and 'Moreover' to structure the response. However, the progression of ideas is limited by the brevity of the text. Paragraphing is present, but the final paragraph is underdeveloped, which disrupts the logical flow. Referencing is sometimes unclear, such as in the phrase 'people who competing with each other they become', where the pronoun 'they' is redundant. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider range of cohesive devices to link sentences and paragraphs more fluidly, and ensure each paragraph contains a fully developed central idea.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for basic communication but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. There is noticeable repetition of words like 'competition', 'competing', and 'work'. Some word choices are imprecise, such as 'few individual believe' (should be 'few individuals believe') and 'take a part' (should be 'take part'). The range is limited, and there is little evidence of less common lexical items or idiomatic language. To improve, focus on using synonyms to avoid repetition and learn collocations related to professional and academic contexts.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('it improve' instead of 'it improves'), incorrect verb forms ('people who competing' instead of 'people who compete'), and missing articles ('in work place' instead of 'in the workplace'). The sentence structures are mostly simple or contain errors when attempting more complex constructions. There is a lack of variety in sentence types. To improve, focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement, correct article usage, and practicing the construction of complex sentences using subordinating conjunctions.
