Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a personal opinion, meeting the basic requirements of the task. However, the development of ideas is limited and often unclear. For example, the argument regarding competition in Japan is vague and does not clearly explain how it relates to the prompt. Similarly, the points about Indian fathers are anecdotal and lack a clear connection to the broader debate on competition versus cooperation. The position is stated, but the supporting arguments are underdeveloped, leading to a superficial discussion that struggles to fully explore the complexities of the topic.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which is a positive step. However, the progression of ideas is often disjointed, and the use of cohesive devices is frequently inaccurate or mechanical. Phrases like 'To commence' and 'In spite of' are used incorrectly or in contexts where they do not logically link the sentences. Referencing is also problematic; for instance, the transition 'Therefore, all the people today think...' does not follow logically from the preceding sentence about Japan. The lack of clear logical flow makes it difficult for the reader to follow the writer's line of reasoning throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and often repetitive. There are frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'enormous tell that majority all the competition' and 'over came their fear'. The writer struggles to express ideas precisely, often using words that do not fit the context, such as 'resident' instead of 'citizens' or 'people'. While the meaning is generally discernible, the lack of control over vocabulary and the frequent misuse of basic terms significantly hinder the sophistication of the response. A wider range of vocabulary is needed to move beyond a basic level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that often impede communication. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement ('many adults today says'), tense usage ('exercise also were been doing'), and sentence structure ('in spite of, humans were taking a part'). Complex sentence structures are attempted but are almost always faulty, leading to confusion. Simple sentences are also prone to errors in articles and prepositions. While the reader can generally understand the intended message, the high frequency of errors throughout the text indicates a lack of control over basic grammatical structures.
