Student answer (Band 6.0)

In a contemporary world, people often compete for everything because of less resources and more demand. Some believe that having a competition is a healthy activity, while others argue that individuals should promote to work with mutual understanding in every sect of life. This essay will discuss both these views before explaining why I maintain that doing work as a cooperation may be a more beneficial activity than competing with the class-mates or colleagues.

Undoubtedly, there are some advantages of having a healthy competition. One of the major merits is that competition allows everyone to be motivated for the task. Consequently, every person tries to provide their best in their respective fields which leads to a positive boost in the productivity. For example, if employer gives a bonus on most sales in call centre job, every employee put efforts to achieve the target, ultimately overall sales increases. Moreover, competing with others taught many lessons like how to survive or struggle in challenging situations. Competition tells the importance and value of certain things. If basic necessities are available without any struggle nobody will know the value of such things.

On the other hand, others believe that working with cooperation provides mutual growth. When everyone works as a team, the overall society grows, instead of personal growth. Furthermore, cooperating with others build societies and encourage a passion of helping others and to work mutually and grow equally. This notion promotes various volunteer activities. If everyone compete for their personal benefits it encourages selfishness which results in a promotion of politics in workplace. Therefore working as a team not only increases productivity but it also make a friendly environment in working areas.

In conclusion, while having healthy competition promote personal growth, working as a cooperation in every field of daily life, develop a overall growth of the society.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both competition and cooperation before providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and generally well-supported, such as the example of call center bonuses to illustrate competition. However, the development is somewhat uneven; the argument for cooperation is slightly less detailed than the argument for competition. To reach a higher band, ensure that the supporting examples for both sides are equally robust and fully explored. The position is consistent throughout the essay, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the main points while reiterating the writer's stance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'Undoubtedly', 'Moreover', 'On the other hand', and 'Therefore' are used effectively to link sentences and paragraphs. However, there are minor issues with referencing and flow; for instance, the phrase 'working as a cooperation' is slightly awkward and impacts the cohesion of the final sentence. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate, and the logical flow is maintained throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, such as 'contemporary', 'respective', and 'notion'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'promote to work' instead of 'promote working' and 'working as a cooperation' instead of 'collaboration'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of the argument. Expanding the range of academic collocations would help elevate the score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the writer attempts complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'because of less resources' (should be 'fewer resources'), 'if employer gives' (missing article), and 'it also make' (subject-verb agreement). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article usage issues throughout. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear, and the grammar does not significantly impede the reader's understanding. To improve, the writer should focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and quantifiers.
