Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response fails to address the prompt adequately. It only discusses the benefits of competition and completely ignores the opposing view regarding cooperation. Furthermore, the essay is significantly under the 250-word minimum, which limits the development of ideas. The arguments provided are repetitive and lack specific examples or logical depth. Because the response does not discuss both views as required by the instructions and is under-length, it does not meet the criteria for a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
The essay lacks a clear structure. There is no introduction or conclusion, and the ideas are presented in a stream-of-consciousness style rather than organized paragraphs. Cohesive devices are almost entirely absent, making the progression of ideas difficult to follow. The transition between sentences is mechanical and often illogical, such as the sudden shift from school competitions to sports and mobile phone usage. The lack of paragraphing further hinders the readability of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.0
The vocabulary is very basic and repetitive. Phrases like 'get a first position' and 'good for the students' are used repeatedly throughout the text. There is a lack of academic vocabulary or collocations appropriate for an IELTS essay. Some word choices are inaccurate, such as 'noble price' (likely meaning 'noble prize' or 'reward') and 'ever studies'. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to express complex ideas, which limits the score significantly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The grammar is characterized by frequent errors that often impede communication. There are significant issues with sentence structure, such as run-on sentences and a lack of proper punctuation. Subject-verb agreement is inconsistent, and there is a lack of complex sentence structures. Many sentences are fragmented or grammatically incomplete, such as 'some of the school is just organizing the competition'. The high frequency of errors makes the text difficult to read and understand.
