Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the mention of Samsung and Apple for competition and group projects for cooperation. However, the development is somewhat superficial. For instance, the discussion on competition could be more deeply explored by explaining the potential downsides, such as burnout or unethical behavior, rather than just listing benefits. While the task is addressed, the supporting arguments lack the depth required for a higher band. The conclusion effectively summarizes the main points and reinforces the balanced position.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'on the one hand', 'on the other hand', and 'furthermore', though some transitions are mechanical or slightly repetitive. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the referencing is occasionally weak, such as the use of 'there' instead of 'their' and some awkward phrasing that disrupts the flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two distinct viewpoints, which helps the reader follow the argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There are frequent errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'competition are' (should be 'is'), 'there grades' (should be 'their'), and 'achievments'. The student relies on basic vocabulary and struggles with collocations, such as 'develop new function' instead of 'innovate' or 'introduce new features'. While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of sophisticated or precise lexical items limits the score. More attention to word forms and spelling is necessary to improve.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('competition are', 'companies are always want'), incorrect pronoun usage ('help him' instead of 'help them'), and missing articles. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after periods and commas. While the errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be distracting. To reach a higher band, the student needs to focus on basic sentence construction and proofreading for common grammatical slips.
