Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response presents both views regarding competition and cooperation, and offers a clear personal opinion in the introduction. However, the essay is severely under-length, containing only 188 words compared to the required 250 words. Furthermore, the final paragraph cuts off mid-sentence, leaving the supporting ideas completely undeveloped. Because the response is significantly shorter than the minimum word count and the conclusion is missing, the task cannot be fully addressed. Consequently, the score reflects this incomplete development, placing it at a Band 5.0 according to the task achievement criteria.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay displays some basic organization, separating the introduction, body paragraphs, and a truncated conclusion. However, the overall progression is heavily disrupted by the incomplete nature of the response, particularly the unfinished final sentence. Cohesive devices are basic and repetitive, such as relying heavily on 'For example' and 'Whereas'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the final paragraph consists of only a sentence fragment, which fails to provide logical development or a cohesive finish. Referencing is occasionally unclear, leading to a score of Band 5.0 for coherence and cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The lexical resource is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'educational institutions' and 'financial debts', but these are accompanied by frequent word choice and collocation errors, such as 'race in the workplace' instead of 'competition', and 'jealousy bacteria' which is an unnatural and confusing collocation. Spelling errors are also present, such as 'Nowaday's'. The range of vocabulary is restricted, and these noticeable inaccuracies occasionally impede the reader's understanding, warranting a Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writer uses a mix of simple and attempting complex sentence forms, but control is weak. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'most of the people feel less status' and 'they started show off'. Articles and prepositions are also frequently misused, such as 'in the wrong direction of competing' and 'is a best thing'. Although some simple sentences are clear, the frequent errors in complex structures cause difficulty for the reader, aligning the response with a Band 5.0 for grammatical range and accuracy.
