Student answer (Band 5.0)

Some people think that competition at work, at school and in daily life is a superb thing. Others believe that we should try to cooperate more, rather than competing against each other. I partially agree with this statement.

In the beganing I am going to describe the positive aspects of rivalry. Competetion is a very good quality. It changes the students' mindset. In school we see a lot of lazy, null and unsuccessfull students in the classrooms of the school. So, teachers do a trick. They bring a contest among the students and the interesting thing is that due to these challenges students can work hard and they get good marks in the end. This method is used in every departament such as schools, politics etc.

Now I am going to talk about the negative and harmful aspects of these unusual conflicts. Some intelligent students make a personal race with the other intelligent students. They try to fight with them even in some cases they kill other students. In some cases they commit sucides if their numbers in examinations are not according to their thoughts.

Moreover, there is a great risk to health because these students work hard day and night. Therefore, they don't have enough time to take rest and their body can't bear them and they became a patient of various diseases like fever. As the quote is that "A sound body have sound mind".

In addition to this, that student has no respect among the students, teachers and his family members.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both the positive and negative aspects of competition and cooperation, presenting a partial opinion in the introduction. However, the development of ideas in the body paragraphs is extreme, unbalanced, and lacks adequate support. For example, the assertion that intelligent students 'kill other students' or commit suicide due to examination results presents unconvincing and extreme arguments rather than well-reasoned social or educational points. While all parts of the prompt are touched upon, the lack of mature elaboration places this aspect of the writing at a Band 5 level.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is divided into paragraphs, but the overall structure and logical progression are weak. The introductory transition ('In the beganing I am going to describe...') is overly conversational and unnatural. Furthermore, paragraphing is fragmented, with single sentences standing alone at the end of the text. Cohesive devices are either repetitive or used inappropriately, such as 'Now I am going to talk about', which detracts from academic style. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the mechanical transitions impede smooth reading comprehension. Overall, these limitations reflect the characteristics of a Band 5 performance.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The lexical range is limited and inadequate for an academic task. The student relies heavily on basic vocabulary and exhibits frequent word choice and spelling errors, such as 'beganing' instead of beginning, 'Competetion' instead of competition, and 'departament'. Informal or awkward phrasing is also present, including 'superb thing', 'lazy, null and unsuccessfull students', and 'teachers do a trick'. While meaning is generally communicated despite these noticeable errors, the lack of precision and control restricts the score to a Band 5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control is inconsistent. Frequent grammatical errors impede readability, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'their body can't bear them and they became a patient' and 'A sound body have sound mind'. Punctuation and article usage are also flawed across multiple sentences. Although some basic sentences are formed correctly, the high frequency of structural and mechanical errors places this criterion firmly at Band 5.
