Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses both views regarding competition and cooperation and attempts to provide an opinion, although the final conclusion or personal stance is missing due to the under-length nature of the essay. The essay contains relevant ideas, such as how competition promotes innovation and motivation in schools and workplaces, and how cooperation helps with group tasks and social relationships. However, the ideas are under-developed and lack extended examples. Furthermore, the response falls short of the 250-word minimum, containing only 217 words. Consequently, the task achievement is negatively impacted, and the band score reflects these limitations.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The text is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, a body paragraph supporting competition, and a body paragraph supporting cooperation. However, the progression is sometimes disjointed. Cohesive devices are used, but they are often basic or mechanically applied, such as 'Similarly', 'However', and 'To illustrate it'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the final paragraph ends abruptly without a concluding statement, leaving the overall arrangement feeling incomplete. Referencing is generally clear, but the lack of a concluding paragraph and limited cohesive range pull this criterion down to a band 5.5.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, but it is somewhat limited and repetitive. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'productivity', 'innovation', and 'experiences', but struggles with precise word choice and collocations, as seen in phrases like 'good habit' instead of 'positive phenomenon' and 'engaging social realtion'. There are also noticeable word-formation and spelling errors, such as 'individual alone' instead of 'individually' and 'realations'. Despite these inaccuracies, communication is not seriously impeded, which places the lexical resource safely in the band 5.0 range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay displays a mix of simple and some attempted complex sentence forms, but these are frequently marred by basic grammatical errors. Examples of tense and agreement issues include 'some people believed', 'students starting competing', and 'worker need to share'. Punctuation is also problematic in places, notably the misplaced comma in 'However , there are'. While the writer attempts complex structures, frequent errors in verb forms, plurals, and subject-verb agreement cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the grammar score from reaching a higher band.
