Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response only partially addresses the prompt due to several significant factors. Most importantly, the response falls severely short of the 250-word minimum, containing only 102 words. This heavy penalty impacts Task Achievement significantly. While the writer attempts to discuss both views regarding competition and cooperation, the ideas remain extremely limited and under-developed. Phrases like 'both views are good' and 'different people have different opinions' are superficial and lack elaboration or specific examples from personal knowledge or experience, as required by the prompt. Furthermore, the writer's own opinion is not clearly stated or supported throughout the text. To achieve a higher band, the writer must fully develop arguments for both sides, provide concrete supporting examples, clearly state a personal perspective, and ensure the word count requirement is met.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
The response lacks an overall logical progression and fails to use standard paragraphing, appearing instead as a single, dense block of text. Cohesive devices are either missing or used inaccurately and repetitively. For example, the writer overuses conjunctions such as 'when' and 'and' to link clauses awkwardly, as seen in 'when we cooperate other as compared to compete other then they help us to do over task'. Referencing is also unclear throughout the essay, making it difficult for the reader to follow the flow of ideas. To improve Coherence and Cohesion, the writer needs to divide the essay into clear paragraphs for introduction, body paragraphs for each view, and a conclusion, while employing a wider variety of appropriate cohesive markers.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.0
The vocabulary used is basic, repetitive, and restricted to everyday words, such as 'good', 'think', 'people', and 'work'. There are numerous spelling and word-choice errors that strain the reader's understanding, including 'competion' instead of competition, 'think' instead of thing, 'beleive' instead of believe, and 'cooperate' misused grammatically without an object in several places. The writer attempts to use some less common words like 'competitor' and 'difficulties', but the overall lexical range is inadequate for an academic task of this nature. To improve, the student should expand their vocabulary related to work, education, and social interaction, and pay closer attention to word forms and accurate spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
Grammatical range is extremely limited, consisting mostly of basic, repetitive sentence patterns that are frequently faulty. The text contains numerous grammatical and punctuation errors that heavily impede communication and distort meaning. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('people think... they thought'), tense inconsistency, and awkward phrasing such as 'when we should compete other then wo doo more concentrate'. Complex sentence structures are attempted but are poorly constructed and inaccurate, leading to high error frequency. To achieve a higher band score, the writer must work on basic sentence construction, ensure correct verb tenses and forms, eliminate run-on sentences, and incorporate a controlled variety of complex structures with greater accuracy.
