Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The candidate addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both the view that competition is beneficial and the view that cooperation should be prioritised, while also presenting a clear personal opinion. The position is maintained throughout the essay, culminating in a balanced conclusion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive at times. For instance, the points about competition encouraging hard work and clarity are stated rather than fully extended with deep elaboration. Similarly, the arguments for cooperation touch on mutual support and group assignments, but remain at a somewhat general level. This places the response comfortably at Band 6, as all parts of the task are addressed with relevant ideas, though some areas suffer from under-development.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear chronological structure, featuring an introduction, distinct body paragraphs for each viewpoint, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. Cohesive devices are employed to link arguments, such as 'Initially', 'On the one hand', 'Opposing this', and 'In conclusion'. However, referencing and cohesion are occasionally faulty or mechanical. For example, the phrase 'Its because of following reasons' is awkward, and the pronoun referencing in 'others believes' lacks precision. Furthermore, the transitional flow between sentences can feel slightly abrupt. Overall, the organizational structure is clear enough to guide the reader through the text, justifying a Band 6 score.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, successfully attempting less common vocabulary items such as 'educational institutions', 'significantly', and 'organizations'. However, there are notable word choice and collocation errors throughout the text, such as 'competition at job' instead of 'competition in jobs', 'regular life' instead of 'daily life', and 'other argues' instead of 'others argue'. There are also spelling and mechanical issues like duplicated words ('help help', 'only compete') and capitalisation slips ('it is an ongoing debate'). While these errors do not impede overall communication, they prevent the lexical score from reaching the higher bands, making Band 5.5 a fair representation of the student's current proficiency.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over basic structures and attempting subordination with clauses introduced by 'such as', 'because', and 'in which'. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement ('other believes'), article usage, and punctuation. For instance, sentences like 'Its because of following reasons' miss the apostrophe in 'It's' and the article 'the'. Additionally, punctuation and spacing errors occur in multiple places. While these errors rarely impede communication entirely, they indicate a lack of consistent control over complex grammatical forms, placing this response at Band 5.5.
