Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response attempts to discuss both views regarding competition and cooperation, briefly touching upon school, work, and daily life, while also providing a personal opinion. However, the ideas are severely limited and under-developed due to the extremely short length of the essay. The student's response contains only 150 words, falling well short of the mandatory 250-word minimum specified for Academic Task 2. Consequently, the task can only be addressed partially. The position is stated—arguing that competition is beneficial in professional and educational contexts but detrimental in personal life—but the arguments lack adequate extension and support. Examples are vague and generic, and the severe under-length penalty heavily impacts this criterion, placing it firmly at a Band 4.0 level according to the task response descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0

The essay lacks proper paragraphing and a clear overall progression. The text is presented in fragmented blocks of text rather than a structured essay with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are minimal, basic, and frequently misused, as seen in transitions like 'well in my opinion' and 'i disagree compettion'. Referencing is often unclear, making the logical relationship between sentences difficult to follow at times. While the reader can generally discern that the writer is shifting from professional life to personal life, the lack of a cohesive structure and logical organization prevents the writing from achieving a higher score. Overall, the structural limitations align with a Band 4.0 descriptor for coherence and cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 4.0

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, relying on simple words such as 'good', 'task', 'life', and 'people'. There are numerous spelling errors throughout the text, including 'compettition' instead of competition, 'theire' instead of their, 'mendetory' instead of mandatory, 'buden' instead of burden, 'deciplane' instead of discipline, and 'frasted' instead of frustrated. These lexical inaccuracies and severe spelling mistakes strain the reader and reflect a limited vocabulary range. Although the student attempts some topic-related vocabulary like 'professional life' and 'cooperate', the high frequency of errors prevents the response from achieving a Band 5.0. Therefore, a Band 4.0 is appropriate for lexical resource.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

The grammatical range is extremely limited, consisting almost entirely of simple sentences and faulty attempts at complex structures. There are persistent, major errors in basic grammar, subject-verb agreement, and punctuation. Examples include 'in my opinion is compettition is good', 'specially in the school is mendetory so student can do best performance', and 'nor need to compettition'. Sentence boundaries are frequently blurred, and capitalization rules are largely ignored. These frequent errors cause significant difficulty for the reader and distort meaning in several places. Because the majority of sentences contain noticeable grammatical errors and a wide range of structures is absent, this criterion falls into the Band 4.0 category.
