Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response attempts to address both views regarding competition and cooperation, and the writer provides a clear personal opinion in the introduction. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. The essay is also significantly under the 220-word count provided, falling well short of the 250-word minimum requirement for Task 2, which negatively impacts task achievement. Furthermore, the conclusion is incomplete, abruptly cutting off at "r however". While the main arguments regarding personal development and peaceful environments are introduced, they lack full elaboration and concrete supporting examples due to the brevity and unfinished nature of the response. Therefore, it satisfies the criteria for a Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay displays some overall organization with a clear attempt at a standard introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, cohesion is frequently faulty and mechanical. Run-on sentences are common due to comma splices, such as in the introduction: "...competing against each other ,this essay will discuss...". Paragraphing is attempted, but the conclusion is incomplete. Cohesive devices are very basic and sometimes inaccurate, such as repetitive use of "also" and "for example" without proper subordination or punctuation. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the lack of a proper closing statement disrupts the logical progression. This performance aligns with Band 5.0 descriptors.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student uses a limited but minimally adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as "competition," "cooperate," "development," and "conflict." There are noticeable word choice errors and awkward collocations, such as "competition support people," "makes the workers is gonna be batter," and "cooperate makes life quite and peaceful." Spelling errors also appear, such as "whey" instead of "why," "batter" instead of "better," and "quite" instead of "quiet." These lexical limitations and errors cause some difficulty for the reader, although basic communication is generally achieved, placing this response at Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The essay demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures. Most sentences are simple or poorly constructed compound/complex sentences linked incorrectly with commas. There are frequent grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ("supporters of competition... helps", "competition generate"), incorrect verb forms ("competition support", "will should cooperate"), and missing capitalization and punctuation. The incomplete conclusion further highlights a lack of control over sentence structure. Because frequent errors cause difficulty for the reader and complex sentences are consistently faulty, a Band 5.0 is appropriate.
